re: How to ship a shotgun?
Posted by Duck Island on 12/6/25 at 8:14 am to prplhze2000
Make sure it’s idiot-proof packed. I had BP Shop send a shotgun back to Beretta in the original box and they beat the shite out of it to the point I traded it in.

Prime with either oil or latex primer(oil prob better) then go back and caulk and putty all the cracks and holes and then follow with 2 coats of good latex wall paint.

Check their site and if they carry what you want you can order online and they ship it to the store. You pay for it when you pick it up. I’m. waiting on a rifle to come in now and also confirmed that I can use a $250. gift card toward the purchase.
re: Outdoor Kitchen - Natural Gas or Propane?
Posted by Duck Island on 11/6/25 at 9:54 am to TopWaterTiger
I had the same situation and ended up running my 30” pit and a 2- burner cooktop on propane. Tank of propane lasts a long time so I don’t switch often. We use the burner a ton for searing, frying and boiling. Tank is stored under the pit inside the SS doors. I’m perfectly happy with the setup and would do it again.
re: 1/2 ton truck vs 3/4 ton
Posted by Duck Island on 10/17/25 at 8:02 pm to tgerb8
I bought a 2025 Sierra diesel this time having always had 1/2 tons. First trip in it my wife said “you’ve got to get rid of this thing.” It rides ok on good roads but it lets you know when you are on a bad road. I find it steers like a boat and isn’t nimble or easy to maneuver. I’ll go back to the 1/2 ton asap.

Call a locksmith. I had those years ago and it seems like a plate that spins to expose the screws in there? Sorry not more help bc it’s been so long since I changed them but I remember the locksmith telling me how to do it. Had them on pool gates and they’re made so they can’t be unscrewed by a random person with a screwdriver. There is def a technique to do it though.
re: U shaped gutters

I have the half-pipe gutters and love them. We did the copper and it was high years ago when we did them but now they are high as giraffe’s arse. Check with Blanco Bros. in BR and also Design Exteriors out of New Roads but comes to BR. I have experience with both.

FWIW I bought an A300 and ended up trading it for the A400. Wouldn’t cycle AA loads and I didn’t like the cheek slap recoil. A400 is a whole diff animal, little heavier but I like that extra weight.

If you have a hose bib you might be able to tie into it for water. Strongly suggest having a sink.

Have a roofer come install the roof vent properly and most A/C guys can pipe right to it.
re: Recs to Recover Boat Cusions - BR
Posted by Duck Island on 4/28/25 at 3:02 pm to Bawpaw
Yes it’s Covers Unlimited. I had a boat cover made by them years ago and just happened to ask and they said they could do it. I was missing one of the jump seat bottoms and needed to copy the one I had and cover them both and they did it.

Covers Unlimited did a couple of jump seat bottoms for an Everglades for me recently. Nice job and reasonably priced.
re: Boat Trailer Bunk Covering
Posted by Duck Island on 4/23/25 at 5:48 pm to Saskwatch
We put 1-1/2” strips of hdpe we cut from a sheet and installed on our Go-Devil boat trailer bunks and it takes nothing to shove them off into the marsh now. As others said, just don’t unhook until in the water because she’s coming off of there!

I’m also moving on from my 20 yr old snapper rider. Looked at a bunch of mowers and went with a Gravely ZTX with the 21.5 hp Kawasaki. Decided to step up from the lower model to get better deck, seat, bigger engine, etc. $4299. at Gautreaux’s.
re: AC System Moisture/Mold Issue
Posted by Duck Island on 3/16/25 at 10:14 am to Chicken
A/C guy said it dries up when you run the air consistently. I checked out the old coils when they brought them down and saw some growth on them. They smelled like arse, worse than the air coming out was.

I had 2 new Trane units installed during a recent remodel and we started smelling this musty smell when we switched from heat to a/c. Called my guy and he said it was prob “dirty sock syndrome”. Researched and found it’s a real thing caused by some bacteria or whatever growing on the coils. Factory ended up sending 2 new coils for the units and they were epoxy coated which supposedly inhibits the growth. So far so good. It’s been abt 2 months now.
re: Waders
Posted by Duck Island on 1/15/25 at 1:50 pm to MarshMan
Our group of duck hunters all have gone to Simms waders over the last few years. Couple guys have the G4 but they are over $1k plus. I have the Freestone Z Bootfoot model and they are the best I’ve ever had. Check the fly shops online, I ended up with 10% off plus free shipping which came to under $600. Kuiu has waders now and they look great and are made by Simms for Kuiu.

Went yest to sight in my new Ruger Gen 2 in .308 and it will not pull the spent case from the chamber. Ruger says to return it to them or they will send extractor and parts to me. I removed the extractor and freed it up and reinstalled but it still leaves the case in the chamber. I’m sure Ruger will make it right but it does suck to have to return the brand new gun to the factory before the first use.

Woerner on Airline will sell it by the piece.

Don’t forget to check out Simms waders. A bunch of us in our group wear them. The Freestone Z Bootfoot is what I have and they are fantastic.
re: using mdf base to cover popcorn ceilings
Posted by Duck Island on 10/17/24 at 7:51 pm to cgrand
Sheetrock guys routinely scrape popcorn off. They can sand and spray texture and make it look good. You will have the mess but that can be cleaned.
If you want wood consider v-groove pine that you finish on the ground and then just cut to size and finish nail it up on 1x4 strips. Just did one where the boards were beat up a bit then torched, stained and slightly white-washed. Beautiful look. Whatever finish you like it’s reasonably priced and covers the popcorn without having to remove it.

re: Yamaha 90 HP overheating while peeing
Posted by Duck Island on 10/10/24 at 1:06 pm to tigereye58
I have a 90 Yamaha that kept overheating too and we changed all the normal parts out and it still did it. Ended up being the water jacket almost totally clogged with buildup. My guy cleaned it all out and was going to patch some of the pitting and roll with it but it ended up being too bad to repair. He found a block off of a freshwater motor and replaced it and it’s never overheated since.

So what is the correct mixture? The msm turf came with a measuring funnel in oz. How much in oz. Should be mixed in 1 gallon for spot spraying?
re: Chevy 1500 or Ram 1500?
Posted by Duck Island on 8/29/24 at 4:01 pm to commode
I’ve had multiple trucks of each brand and never tried a Ram. Bought the new Tundra when it came out and traded it for a 2023 Ram Laramie. Got 40k on it and it’s been my favorite of all of them. Last of the hemi engine but I’ll stick with the Ram for the next one. Really don’t think I could live without the RamBox on the bed now that I have it.

I picked mine up Monday and it has a shim installed but no others came w/ it. Comes w/ a couple plastic spacers to adjust lop. BPS said 29 of them arrived from online orders. I think they are out of the sale guns.

Home Depot carries the the replacement mechanism for those. Turn the power off and install a new one for abt $80. I think.

I did both a 30” gas grill and a Kamado Joe (Lg). I like charcoal pits and didn’t think I’d use the gas much but I do. Quick and easy. That being said, I use the KJ for grilling and slow cooking and I prefer the charcoal whenever poss.
I def recommend the Kamado Joe as it has better features than the Green Egg imo.
