Get my barrel threaded or get a new gun?

I know my degenerates on here are going to say buy the new gun
Main problem I have with that is I’m running out of room in my small house to hide guns from our kids. I already have a few stacked in the closet and others put out of reach.
I’ve been wanting to get a suppressor for my hunting rifle, for my own hearing and my kids if/when they want to come with me. I currently have an older Mossberg Patriot .308 my dad got me years ago for my first gun. I either want to get that threaded or buy a gun already threaded. I’ve been looking at a Tikka or the newer Ruger American Gen 2.
Also, if I do get a new gun, should I go with a .308 again? Or add a new caliber to the mix? Like I mentioned, space is fairly limited right now so not having to buy more boxes of a different type of ammo would be nice and I’ve just always hunted with a .308 so it’s what I know and I’m comfortable with. But I’m open to suggestions.
Lastly, if I do get my current barrel threaded, where would y’all recommend around the Baton Rouge area to bring it?

I’d look for something in the 16 inch to 18 inch barrel if you’re going to put a can on it.
I think tikka’s shortest barrel maybe 20 inches but Bergara may have something shorter.

I will. I have 2 daughters under 2 and only 1 gun is even loaded (not chambered) so I know there’s nothing that she can do to get it to fire if she found it anyways.
By the time they’re older we’ll be in a bigger place and it won’t be a problem.
And thanks

Didn’t think of that. That’s why I come for advice. Thanks.

This is ALWAYS the correct answer. Always.

You’re right, I grew up in a house with dozens of guns and no safe. I was educated properly. But I also mention a safe for theft prevention as well

Get a brand spanking new tikka t3 with a threaded barrel, duh.
Get another .308. Its the easy button.

The taper on the barrel is likely too small to be threaded unfortunately.
I have a Ruger American Predator in .308. It’s an 18” barrel. I replaced the stock with a Magpul American stock. New stock feels much better than factory. The gun shoots really well.

Just get your current rifle's barrel cut down and threaded. I have a can on my CVA Scout 35 Whelen, and it was way too long. I got it cut down to 16"

I love my Tikka T3 Tactical with a DA Sandman S in 260Rem

I threaded my superlite in 6.5, then got another superlite in 300wm, both shoot lites out. This is the answer.

I would get a new gun. As other said Tikka CTR or Tactical are great guns and suppressor ready.
Also, just a heads up on suppressors. Since the gov is shut down the ATF is not processing form 4s. That on top of the upcoming removal of the $200 tax stamp in 2026 it's going to be a while before you will be able to get a suppressor in hand. Which sucks because just recently it was only taking a few days to get approval.
I will add a suppressor to a hunting rifle is a game changer. Especially hunting with young kids.

I have several threaded barrels, but I hunt with a ruger predator in 308 with a 16.5 in barrel which is a dream with my can. Probably at least cost $200 for the thread job, so might as well but a new one.

Never really needed one, as stated I have very young kids who are incapable of getting to guns on a shelf 7 feet off the ground in the closet.

This is what I've heard from numerous people. I've never personally shot one but it's a reason I was looking into them

This is where the “why not both” meme would be handy.
If it were me, I don’t modify the guns I get handed down - or at least not the ones with any sentimental value.
I echo others about getting a safe, but also start your kids shooting and handling guns very young. Let them know they are dangerous when mishandled, but are also just objects.
I did with mine and by the time they hit double digits I could leave guns out and they weren’t messed with. My children also knew to keep other kids away from guns if they weren’t home and came across a gun somewhere else. There is no mystery with guns for them. It makes safety easier in my opinion.
