Do you turn your water main off when going on vacation for a week?

I’ve never done it, but the fear of my house flooding is always in the back of my mind.

Shouldn't need to turn off the main. There should be a valve where the water from the main comes into the house and you turn that off if you're worried about potential water damage.

On my house it's right on the front wall where the copper line comes out of the ground and before it makes entrance into my home.

Yes, I shut my water off at the valve where the water line enters the house when we leave for vacation.

Only once, a few years ago when we were gone for a week and it was going to be multiple days of freezing in a row. Still missed one S-curve and the pipe busted. We didn't have another option, though so it wasn't so bad.

We do at our hunting camp. We didn’t for a long time and a pipe busted. Flooded the whole camp and became a mold infested dump. We turn it off now obviously.

That's just another main down stream of the other main. And not everyone has that. Us folk who don't live in these fancy new builds still have to use the meter valve.

Also we just pay someone to stay at our house to watch the dogs.

Never have, but I do know two people whose house flooded while they were gone. Both were because a shutoff valve to a toilet failed and broke loose.

Most houses dont have that in LA

In some states it is part of code I think

No. Don't want to come home to a dead yard.

They just spontaneously broke loose? That’s weird.

My neighbors toilet over flowed while they were gone. I turn that off as well as my water heater. Many new water heaters have a vacation mode that you can activate

LA as in Louisiana, or LA as in Los Angeles? I've bought 4 houses over the years in La. and lived in a few other before buying and all of them had valves where the water enters the house from the meter.

Were they DR Horton or DSLD or something?

The mass produced starter homes seem to have it.

Damn I never really thought to do it, but you just jogged my memory of helping my dad go turn the water off on the house before going on vacations as a kid.

Homes built in the last 15 years in California are required to include fire suppression sprinkler systems set up in all habitat areas.

My house was built in the 50s so it’s not something I have to deal with fortunately.

I’m not sure if they are tied directly to your domestic water or have a separate shutoff? Actually a good question I’m going to look up when I get time from shitposting
