When the tire stores were out of black tires I would get whitewalls and put the white to the inside

I was wondering this the other day also. Man, back in the day, if you had a nice car, especially a sportscar, you wouldn't even consider anything else.

Most of the tires pictured are referred to as whitewall but aren’t true whitewalls. They are black walls with a white stripe added on.

True whitewall

Why they went out of style? Combination of cleaning and higher cost.

How many people do you see actually washing their own cars today???

Most just run them through a carwash and whatever gets cleaned is all it gets-------no scrubbing the fender wells to get off road dirt that accumulates, no deep cleaning of tires and rims, no wiping down the door jambs or the metal on the underside of the trunk and hood.

Really in the early 80s. When I was in high school, that if all was white letters. No hot rod was complete without some white letter tires

Th last I remember seeing whitewall tires was in the 80s. And it was on models popular with older folks, like WWII generation, who were reaching their 60s and 70s at that time.

Which, whitewall tires are what they’d grown up with. Back in the 40s and 50s, having whitewalls was a status symbol. It was the cheap tires that don’t have whitewalls.
