Took my daughter to Honey Island yesterday for her fist time shooting guns. She shot pistols and then my two 22 rifles. Figured I’d start her out on something simple. Shot very well with the 10-22 at 50yds and was even putting rounds on paper at 100yds. Had a great time and that’s really a first class operation out there. We will definitely be back. Didn’t know they had skeet throwers.

There was a gentlemen next to us shooting a Ruger Precision 17HMR and really drilling out the center of a target at 100yds. Never shot one before but the ammo is still pretty cheap. Anyone own a rifle, is it worth spending a little money on a good bolt gun?

It is an awesome round. It is insanely fast and flat and packs a punch. It is much more potent than a .22 and has very little if any recoil. It can take down small hogs easily. Get a Savage 93R17. It is a great gun for less than $400.

It's a fun round to shoot with. I think a 22 wmr is more practical but that's just an opinion. I know a lot of folks who love the 17

Get a CZ 457 and you can swap out barrels, 22 WMR, 17 HMR and 22 LR

I have a savage bolt action 17. My boy laid out plenty of 80-100lb hogs w it. Awesome round.

Have a savage 93v17 and I have 2 complaints.

I hate the magazine and mag release

Second is my fault, I didn’t buy it threaded.

This is better suited for those who can only own so many firearms because of where they live. Everytime you change barrels, you have to re-zero the sites. Just buy one dedicated rifle for each caliber when possible.

Great, hot little round. Don't sleep on the Mach 2 either. I picked one up when 22lr got scarce. It eats up the nutria.

The problem with 17hmr is the lack of match grade ammo. The ammo is a crap shoot. You might have a tack driver and you might have a nutria gun depending on the ammo lottery.

I have a Marlin that is incredibly fun to shoot. It's a supersonic round so it's much louder than it looks like it should be when you're handling the ammo. The first time my dad heard me shoot it he fussed at me thinking I was playing a practical joke on him because he was expecting a .22 sound. It will destroy small game animals if you're not careful with shot placement. My nephews tore up a mess of cotton tails in south Texas. There's not much meat on those little things anyway so if you don't shoot them in the head you won't have much left but the gun can absolutely make headshots at 50-75 yards on a cotton tail.

I can use it for squirrels. The HMR is a bit much for that.

if you’ve never rolled a nutria with .17 you are missing out. There is an audible SMACK

Same with 22 mag.
Not any target options.

Have one of these and also a CZ 452 in .17HMR.
Both are fantastic shooters, but as someone else mentioned, the magazine release on the Savage could be better.
As someone else also mentioned, I like a .22 mag better.

I just bought a little Rossi 22 WMR with a threaded barrel specifically to shoot hogs. My WMA has goofy rules about what you can shoot them with at particular times of the years.

Once it's tree rat season, I can go "squirrel" hunting but kill hogs with whatever you'd usually use to shoot a squirrel with.

I thought about a .17 but decided against it just because I already had 22 WMR rounds in the closet

Yep. 22 mag is very useful rimfire, the ammo quality and therefore the accuracy is just a total crapshoot
