“Soybeans are the single largest American export to China in terms of value, $12.6 billion worth last year. But as the fall harvest gets underway across the country — 9 percent of planted beans had been harvested as of last week — the country that bought 52 percent of all American soybean exports last year is completely absent.
The Trump administration pledged to support Argentina as it faces economic turmoil. The same day, Argentina suspended its tax on exports of a number of key crops, including soybeans. Shortly thereafter, Chinese companies bought more than one million tons of Argentine soybeans, according to Reuters, increasing the nation’s ability to hold out from buying the crop from America.“

Tariffs are temporary and meant to get countries to renegotiate bad deals.
This isn’t hard

Sounds like they’re negotiating with other countries.

We should buy them up and turn them into baby formula.
The farmers stay afloat until the trade war is over and we can reduce WIC by an offsetting amount, since we have the formula to distribute.

Trump has lost a good bit of credibility with other powerful world leaders.
He excels when dealing with weaker regimes like Hamas, Isis, Iran where he can bully them. He does well with trade deals when dealing with friendlier allies like Japan and South Korea or the EU. But he is struggling with Putin and the war in Ukraine and trade with China. They’ve called his bluffs and he blinked first. Ukraine is dicey due to lack of support from American voters and that’s a catch 22. But with China he should have kept all tariffs on them until they made a deal. He gave Xi a break while “negotiating” and now China is running out the clock while trying to destroy our farmers. At this point I think we should decouple from them, but I don’t know who takes Chinas place, India could do it but they seem content to snuggle up with China and Russia over us as well.

Soybean production has doubled over the last 20 years. Farmers were, in the past, and can grow other crops if needed. China can’t feed its people and if they want to buy food for their people, they need to sell goods they manufacture. I can assure you Brazil and Argentina aren’t gonna keep the lights on with trade.
The money we save from fired federal workers and the bogus USAID will easily supplement the farmers temporarily.
USA! USA!

Correct. As cheap as China shite is for us, 75% of the world's population still can't afford it.

He can’t really mess with with China because they have him by the left nut with UST stockpiles and his right nut with the bulk of our rare earths supply

Did you write The Art of the Deal? I don't think so.

Also last year the country had a $32 billion trade deficit from importing fruits and vegetables - you know, the things we can put on the plate and eat.
I think I see opportunity here.

So are we going to negotiate with ourselves?
Posted on 10/4/25 at 8:31 am to ChiGator
The article is a very simplistic view of an extremely complicated world commodity market. One thing it highlights is the need to broaden our agricultural trade partners as we decouple ourselves from china on multiple economic fronts.. an objectively good goal that will take some time and stress on particular sectors

Trump negotiated a good trade deal with China in his first term. China agreed and then reneged.
