New Deer Rifle

Looking for a new rifle it would mainly be used for whitetail deer . Open to any caliber. I have looked into a 7mm prc in tikka and in browning.

That will probably be my next caliber so I approve!

Most people in the Southeast would never really get the benefit of shooting a caliber like that unless they are hunting on a pipeline.
I built an AR in 6.5 Grendel and it’s been fantastic.

Southwest Ark and nothing crazy far. Just kinda wanna be prepared for anything that may pop up down the road.

That’s whole bunch of gun for whitetail. Agree with other poster unless you’re routinely making 300+ yard shots it’s overkill.

Well a 7mm prc would cover anything that would pop up down the road. It’s a pretty sweet caliber. Could easily take it out west for deer/elk too.
I just always get a chuckle when I see guys take a 7mm or .300 win mag to the stand to roll a 110lb doe at 85 yards

I have been hunting a 308 for a few years and love it. Our shots are never over 250 yards. I have been having an itch for that 7mm also.

Tikka is the correct answer for the rifle.
Caliber, whatever you want. .30-06, .308, .270, 6.5 manbunn are the correct answers if you want practicality.

I've rolled an 80 pound doe at 35 yards with a .338 win mag

270. Tikka, bergara, savage etc all have good bolt options

Road hunting is illegal is most places unless you are running dogs; but a good ole 30-06 or .270 will handle it.

.270 isn't the cool kid flavor anymore, but it was designed as a western hunting cartridge and is very fast and flat. If you aren't dealing with canyon wind drift or 500 yard + long range stuff, it's an extremely good mid range choice with pretty mild recoil and tremendous ammo options available.
And the reality for most southern hunters is that if you're having to worry about drops, you are probably going to miss anyway regardless of what caliber you have. Not many hunters ever shoot a target past 100 yards, much less often enough and away from the bench enough to get good at it.

I have a 6.5 PRC and I love it, but it’s probably not a whole lot better than a .270 (especially with me on the backside of it).

Good read.

30-06, .270, and .308 have been around for a very long time. And for a reason.

I bought a Savage Axis II Pro in 308 this year simply because I wanted one hunting rifle with a threaded barrel, all my other rifles are “old school”. I don’t know if it is chambered in 7prc or not but I know the 110 trail hunter is and that rifles shoots lights out. Medium barrel, threaded, hogue stock and you can get them under $500. That’s hard to say no to.

I’ve got all types of rifles and calibers but it’s tough to beat a 16 inch suppressed bolt action in .308 for shots 200 and under. I got one 2 seasons ago and haven’t even shot any of my other bolt action rifles.
It’s light, doesn’t kick and easy to hunt out of a box blind with or spot and stock because it’s so light.

I'd go with a legacy caliber before 7mm PRC. Something like .270, .308, 7MM Mag, etc. will ensure that you have readily available ammo for the foreseeable future.
My dad purchased a .270WSM and .300WSM years ago and although it was big for 3-4 years, it's very hard and expensive getting ammo for them now. I can see the same happening with a lot of these new, hot cartridges

30-06 is the perfect whitetail caliber, most shots are under 250 yards which is easy with this gun.
You can get from 180 grain to 145 grain loads
The 165 grain core-lokt is an awesome round.
all these new fancy calibers are for the Sitka Cloths Boys
