Ten college coaches' buy outs

Kirby leads but SEC isn't alone in this madness
When value for money disappears, what will college football do? All these state schools (but for USCw) and a significant fraction of all this money potentially going to Jimmy Sexton and his ilk.

AD's should never agree to these kinds of numbers. Look at UK, we haven't gotten rid of Stoops because of his buyout and he obviously doesn't care and has quit trying and apparently our AD can't get the money together to fire him. It's a joke.

JFC; these are technically public employees. Also, people in public sector jobs are terrible negotiators.

what's the point of a contract if it doesn't have to be honored?

What do you mean?

Im with you. At some point there arent really any "cant miss" hires.
If ADs were more consistent about nailing their hires and we had a proven record of coaches being good for 10+ years outside of a small handful, then it might make sense.
I would almost rather be able to fire fast and cheap until I find the right guy, then go a little heavier after proven if I needed to.
I might be jaded from paying Gus, Harsin, and not maybe not having the cash to fire Freeze, though

quote:Odd to single out Kelly's contract with this comment given that most of the other coaches on the list have won a national championship either.
Astonishing and incredible for a coach who has not won a national championship at the Division I level.

Outside of a few states, the highest paid public employee is almost always a coach.

How is the contract not being honored? The buyout clause is part of the contract. If a coach gets fired, the school owes him the buyout per the contact. If the coach leaves for another job before his contract is up, the coach (or new school) has to pay the old school to buyout the remainder of the contract.
If contracts didn't have to be honored, then schools wouldn't have to worry about huge buyouts when they want to fire under-performing coaches.

That is the most depressing map I have ever seen.

We may see a major shift in college coaching salaries very soon. Recruiting no longer matters, it about the money.
Instead of having 10-15 mil a year tied up in 3 coaches, go cheaper and use that money to go buy players.
Bad coaches can win a lot of games with a good roster. Mediocre coaches can win a title with a great roster.

Like you said, there aren't very many can't miss hires, so why pay these guys like they are. School run through coaches and tens upon tens of millions of dollars because of the sole reason that it's, "the way we do things."

It's stupid, and it's a classic, universal example of government bureaucratic ineptitude and stubbornness because they're playing with money that's not theirs.

watch how many programs end up running deficits when revenue share piles up after five years or so

That chart isn't current, our football coach is paid almost twice what our basketball coach is now, and that's why I want our AD to be fired.

Figured Louisiana would be "Police Sergeant averaging 160 OT hours per week"

It’s a great retirement plan, maybe guys like Billy Napier are actually geniuses. Work your butt off and climb the ranks, get a high-level job and then tank on purpose. Get your buyout and live in luxury

Lincoln Riley might never coach again...he struck gold while the iron was hot, during CFB chaos era...he got his golden parachute, SC paid him "sure thing" money when in hindsight, and Sooner fans, will tell you, he was far from that.

How much money does the football program bring in compared to the basketball program?
