Does a 2 piece vs 3 piece golf ball make a noticeable difference?

If so, is it mainly spin around the greens?

The extra distance that a two piece ball gives you over a three-piece is not worth the cost. When you hit an eight iron from 140 the ball rolls 10 feet from the cup. That same eight iron from 140 with a two piece ball rolls, 20 feet past. When you chip with a three piece ball It will check a bit and give you a lot more control than a two piece ball.

I will not play golf with a 2 piece ball nor a ball without a Urethane cover.

Nobody on this board is good enough for it to make a difference.

Probably everybody on this board is good enough to make a difference.

I'm not sure I'd go that far, but sort of agree in that I do think that most players overestimate the impact of equipment on their scores. I've been playing golf for thirty years public and private, most of that at a low double/high single digit handicap, and in my experience most players aren't good enough ball strikers to consistently tell the difference between balls and most modern clubs. I see hackers all the time insisting they won't play anything other than a Pro V and they struggle to break 100.

I’m sort of in between.

I’m aging and as the swing speed goes down, I seem to be able to get a supersoft/wilson duo/speedsoft/trufeel to fly further off the tee.

There is some difference in greenside spin between the ionomer and urethane covers.

I like the Taylor Made tour response which is a lower compression golf ball with a urethane cover.

Balls I’ll give ya. But clubs? Cmon. Anyone who plays with any frequency would be able to tell if you blindly swapped out their clubs, especially their woods.

I honestly think this comes down to what your HDCP and strong suits are.

To many higher caps, extra roll out on shots may actually help. If you're a bad wedge player, then having a ball that rolls a bit further may actually help if you tend to leave it short.

For me, I try to play a ball that compliments the entirety of my bag and not just one element. AVX does this really well.

100% this, almost everyone is not good enough to blame anything but themselves.

As a 5 handicap, If I play a proV1 vs Callaway warbird, do I notice a difference in spin and feel? Of course

Do I think I’m good enough for that difference in spin and feel to impact my score? Nope

I suspect you have it backwards - you are good enough that it wouldn't impact your score significantly because you can accommodate for it.

My hcp is in the teens. I can tell a difference in feel of a urethane ball especially around the greens. That said, I don't play a traditional "premium" ball. I don't think the performance improvements, if any, justify the price premium.

Yea I mean there 100% are benefits to playing a ball that suits your game and swing speed. Even if you don't factor in if you like/need playing a ball with more check around the green, plenty of two piece balls just don't suit a high swing speed.

I had someone give me a sleeve of Title Tour Soft to play because they said they are just like ProV's. Around the green they were close, off the tee, it was a disaster. The ball just didn't match my swing, it created some massive slice instead of the normal fade I'd play. Switch back to my ball after nine holes and it's back to normal.

Depends on the course too. I play at a nice course with really fast and firm greens and even someone that isn't that great would benefit by simply having a ball that would stop on the greens better.

But on the other hand, I have a buddy just getting back into golf and he is obsessed with what ball to play right now. I have told him over and over again that the Callaway chrome soft or whatever $25 a box he was buying was for sure, without a doubt, a good ball for him to be playing. He just bought two dozen Maxfli tours and a dozen Srixon z stars because he's convinced he needs them. He knows i play the Srixon z star so he thinks that's what he should do. I'm a 4 HDC, he isn't even to the point of keeping score yet and loses 6 balls a round.

I used to play Maxfli Tours for normal rounds and ProV's in tournaments but I've completely switched to Srixon. The buying two dozen and get one free deal they run is the best deal out there. Works out to $33 a box. I played in a Ryder cup event this past week and of the three days and nine other people I played with/against, I was the only one that used anything other than a ProV.

I've been playing the AVX for a few years and like it a lot. I'm getting older and probably could gain a little off the tee with some other balls but on approaches from long iron to wedges the AVX performs very well for my swing.

Played a scramble yesterday with some guys from work, one of which is a 3 hdcp and long off the tee. He started using the Maxfli Tour and loves it. I don't know much about the ball but it performed well from the tee and stopped on a dime on wedge shots. I think he said they were only $31 a dozen.

I sometimes wonder about balls with my driver. Would a cheaper ball slice less, etc?

I wanted to like the new Maxfli line so badly, but I absolutely hate their feel.

I played it for a while. Best mid iron ball ever. I lost some distance off the tee and spin around the green though.

The new Callaway chrome tours have good reviews. I usually play a super soft but I’m trying out the chrome tours.
