I don’t visit this board much and I don’t know if this has ever been a topic. Probably has. Anyway…

Not saying these are the best ever. But definitely up there and meaningful, at least IMO

Don't confront me with my failures
I had not forgotten them

(Jackson Browne, These Days -written at 16)

My pain is self-chosen
At least I believe it to be
I could either drown
Or pull off my skin and swim to shore
Now I can grow a beautiful shell for all to see

(Mad Season/Layne Staley, River of Deceit)

“They dedicate their lives
To running all of his.
He tries to please them all,
This bitter man he is.”

Metallica, “The Unforgiven.”

Those lines resonated with me as a teenager and even more so today.

The chain that fell off my bike last night
Is now wrapped round my heart
Sometimes I think that
Fate has been against us from the start

Who makes my decisions? Who reads all your thoughts?
What makes us how we are?
Faith can't prove what science won't resolve
Kumbaya my lord, c'mon row your boat ashore
The river's long, it is cold
It chills the body but not the soul

But I can live and breathe
And see the sun in wintertime

When my morning comes around, from a new cup I'll be drinking
And for once I won't be thinking that there's something wrong with me
And I'll wake up and find that my faults have been forgiven
And that's when I'll start living, when my morning comes around

Down the street the dogs are barking
And the day is gettin' dark
When the darkness falls
Them dogs 'll lose their bark
And the silent night will shatter
From the sounds inside my mind
As I'm one too many mornings
And a thousand miles behind

Here's a recent one that hit me, especially since I have a daughter.

Yesterday, she said her first word
She's a long way from "I do"
Right now she runs to me
One day, she'll run to you
And it's gonna be your best day
But it's gonna be my worst
You might watch her walkin' towards you, but I saw her walkin' first

There is unrest in the forest
Trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas
The trouble with the maples
(And they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade
There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
As the maples scream, "Oppression"
And the oaks just shake their heads
So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights
They say, "The oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light"
Now there's no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe, and saw

I can't forget the sound
Cuz it's here to stay
The sound of people chasing money
And money...getting away.

Excellent choice. That specific verse always hits for me.

A few that I always liked for various reasons.

First, from a song many associate with Linda Ronstadt, but written by Warren Zevon(RIP), and almost perfectly encapsulates his wry sense of humor that came through in many of his lyrics.

I lay my head on the railroad tracks
And wait for the Double E
The railroad don't run no more
Poor, poor pitiful me

A couple from the same song, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, by Gordon Lightfoot, that paint a vivid picture and touch on the uncertainty of life.

When suppertime came the old cook came on deck sayin'
"Fellas, it's too rough to feed ya"
At seven P.M. a main hatchway caved in, he said
"Fellas, it's been good to know ya"

Does anyone know where the love of God goes
When the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Yesterday
All my troubles seemed so far away
Now it looks as though they're here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday

Suddenly
I'm not half the man I used to be
There's a shadow hangin' over me
Oh, yesterday came suddenly

Why she had to go, I don't know, she wouldn't say
I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday

The 1st girl I fell head over heels for just disappeared, without a word. Just thinking maybe I said something wrong.

when I read the thread title, this is the first song I thought of.

that and Change by Blind Melon

When you feel life ain't worth living
You've got to stand up
Take a look around, look up way to the sky, hell yeah
And when your deepest thoughts are broken
Keep on dreamin' boy, 'cause when you stop dreamin' it's time to die

I have always found "Hurt" by NIN to be a very stark and moving description of the loneliness, helplessness and hopelessness of addiction:

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
Try to focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old, familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away in the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of shite
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away in the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

Took my chances on a big jet plane
Never let 'em tell you that they're all the same
The sea was red and the sky was grey
Wondered how tomorrow could ever follow today
