When would y'all say the Saints Decline started?

In my opinion, I thought it started when the Saints extended Brees in 2018 and refused to draft a competent backup. Brees was starting to decline and we need his cost to be low to improve the surrounding talent on defense.
Loomis was kicking the can down the road for years by extending guys with dead money on the cap that limited the teams true financial flexibility.

Losing Sean Payton, and getting Dennis Allen instead.

The last few years of Sean Peyton!

2018 for sure. It was very clear that Drew lost his arm and our future borrowing was out of control. Loomis just let it ride then doubled down each year.

When Drew couldn't close the 49ers playoff game.
Jan 2012 effectively closed the door on that team and his career.
Should have moved on that off season

A couple different spots
Payton not being able to keep a secret and it resulting in the Chiefs moving up for Mahomes
Trading up and choosing Davenport over Lamar Jackson
Sitting idly by and letting Justin Jefferson go at pick 22 when he needed a WR (literally the 1 year we didn't piss ourselves trying to trade up). Then we pick Ruiz and move him from Center to Guard against his wishes.
The next year, we still need a WR, so we trade extreme draft compensation for 3% frame Olave and then we draft a tackle that can't pass block 5 picks later
It's been over since those last 2 moves.

Are you referring to the game where our defense gave up 36 points and a last second drive to Alex fricking Smith and blaming it on Brees, who threw for 462 yards and left his own 4th Q drive to score 8 points and take a 3 point lead with 90 seconds left? Lol

I’d probably say 2019 aka the season after the no call against Rams.
Saints were still really good in 2019 and pretty good in 2020 due to our defense. Drew started losing zip on the ball around this time and wasn’t the same. Our draft classes were becoming terrible.
It’s a very bleak future from where we stand today..

tDecline was definitely 2020
1. Last year in the Drew Brees era
2. Knowing we had needed help at WR for 2 years at this point - yet not even taking a viable WR in the top 3 rounds (taken Ruiz, Baun, Trautman instead)
3. frick jared cook

People think not drafting Lamar started the Saints decline? The Ravens DID draft Lamar and they’ve won 3 playoff games since then. I think the decline officially started after Jameis Winston tore his ACL 5 weeks into the season. He was cooking and looking like the successor to Brees before the injury. The rest is history.

True. I almost forgot how much of a fricking bitch Jared Cook is. Carrying that ball like a damn loaf of bread against the Bucs. Built like a damn monster and softer than a baby blanket.

Passing on Lamar Jackson.

IMO it’s when Jameis tore his ACL against the Bucs.

Right after the NFL gifted us the SuperBowl(thanks Katrina!)

IMO its basically just tied to:
- not really hitting on many draft picks after 2017
- hiring Dennis Allen
- Drew retiring and the subsequent QB carousel

When we lost Drew Brees… went from winning the NFC south every year those last 4 years to never seeing the playoffs again since…
Drew is BY FAR the saints goat. He is one of the biggest reasons for the saints success… Only other person you could argue was bigger is SP… I know SP wishes he had Brees in Denver right now…

I basically agree with this. Brees and especially Sean Payton were self serving at the end of their tenures. But the Brees contract handcuffed the Saints greatly, it still affects financial decision making.
Loomis let Sean have a ton of control and autonomy and the dude bailed when there was no meat left on the bone. For all the credit he got in NOLA, it should still be eroding to this day.

Mahomes is on record saying he called the Chiefs to tell them "if you want me you better get ahead of the Saints"
Because he is a little bitch
