Going for work in a couple of weeks Oct 6-11 and I'm interested to hear any recommendations for the Capitol Hill and Georgetown areas.

Looking for a coffee shop in Georgetown and maybe Italian food or pizza.

Completely open to any suggestions around Capitol Hill. Thanks very much.

Filomena (and I second Fiola Mare as well) for Italian

Founding Farmers
Old Ebbitt (for the oysters). This and FF are near the WH and Dupont circle.

Piso y Nazca was good for Peruvian

Umaya for Japanese

There’s a bunch of good steakhouses but that kinda depends on your itinerary and price point.

ETA: I just saw you wanted Italian and near the capitol. So some of mine are off point—but had good meals at all of them

I was surprised the two times I’ve been to DC at how good the food options were. You really can’t go wrong walking around and popping in somewhere either. Not sure if you’ve got kids with you or not, but there’s a bunch of great drinking/small plate spots near the capitol, Mall, and White House. I’d walk around and just pop into one for a happy hour or lunch and a drink. Off the Record is in the basement of the Hay Adams is a good spot—it’s in the basement. Swipe some coasters if you can they are usually pretty funny political cartoons.

Centrolina, or its more casual cousin across the alley, Piccolina de Centrolina are very good. Sfoglina has a location a few blocks from Centrolina. I've eaten at several of the Sfoglina locations and all have been very good. Osteria Mozza in Georgetown is the DC outlet of a Nancy Silverton's LA restaurant and also pretty good.

For coffee there are Tatte cafes all over and they're pretty solid.

had coffee and breakfast at Tatte on Wisconsin and Q St in Georgetown on Saturday and it was very good. Dropped into Martin's Tavern afterwards for a beer and a lot of people were in there eating breakfast - looked good. Walked by and checked out a French place - Boulangerie Christophe and the food looked spectacular. There was another breakfast spot - Yellow that had a line down the block waiting to get in.

Had brunch on Sunday at The Occidental which was nice.

In DC you should check out a few "power" establishments. On Cap. Hill that would be Butterworth's where Trump people hang out. Also on the Hill are The Moncle and Hawk & Dove that are less partisan.

Old Ebbitt grill is neither Hill or George Town, but it is a must for a high-alcohol drink and seasonal seafood. Eat at the bar if you are by yourself.

I was about to recommend Chadwick's in Gtown, but it's relocated to Old Town Alexandria. You can catch a passenger boat across the Potomac or do the Metro.

General rule of thumb... restaurants in hotels are probably good. In office buildings probably not.

We did Fiola Mare last year and thought it was good, I did go to Jack Rose before so I may not be the best judge though

Great steakhouse town.

The thing that surprised me in DC is the crab cake game. Better than Baltimore.

Thanks everyone for the rec's in DC. I particularly enjoyed Filomena in Georgetown. The place was all decked out for Halloween and everyone's mouth fell open when they walked in. The little kids were all excited. Nice experience. Food was great. Had a white chocolate and macadamia nut mouse for dessert that was pretty unforgettable.

Also notable was Tatte coffee shop. I stopped by the location on Capitol Hill several times and had a Tatte Late. They have fresh baked goods and I got a passion fruit mousse that was decadent and a lemon meringue tart. They use fresh fruit juices to make their pastries and make hand made crusts. Definitely top tier coffee house.

Also want to mention.. I went to The Smith, a Restaurant Bar/Pub in Capitol Hill and had their burger, Le Burger, which comes with a gravy boat of Peppercorn Mustard Sauce to pour over your fries, and or burger. I've never had a peppercorn mustard sauce and it was outstanding.

There are several recipes out there and they all look pretty much the same. Try this on burgers, chicken or roasted potatoes at home, to take them to the next level.
