Did our grandparents think the Germans and Japanese deserved forgiveness?

Unfortunately I never got to have that conversation, but today got me thinking.

We should always forgive our fellow man, but where is the line between demon/possession in leaders and their blind followers.

I think Trump was making the distinction between he and Charlie in that, Trump is fighting a higher evil and Charlie was a prophet trying to bring us together. There is a difference.

Forgiveness is a thing for individuals, not for governments.

War is a completely different subject.

Christianity preaches forgiveness, but also acknowledges that war is something that is just in certain circumstances

My dad was a HS sophomore at the end of WW2, so I guess he was probably a 6th grader for Pearl Harbor. His response was always “hell fùckin’ no!!!!!!!”

Forgiving does not mean excusing.

Forgiving does mean being excused from justice

Don’t conflate the two

Some of us get so caught up in the mistake that forgiveness means absolving consequences that we skip forgiveness altogether.

My Grandfather and Uncles who fought in WWII never forgave the Nazis nor did they forgive the Japanese.

Growing up, being told of reconstruction by my grandparents and great grandparents .... I'll never forgive yankees, especially Sherman and his yankee army. His journals and letters to Grant reinforce that to this day .... especially after what they did to Columbia.

I do not forgive rapists, murderers and arsonists ... nor do I forgive savages, mass muderers, torturers, arsonists .... of women and children.

Germans, the German people, paid a hefty price for the Nazis. I met a lot of good Germans while visiting there over the years. And the Japanese are now our strongest allies in the Pacific.

I still have a hard time giving a rats arse about Chicago, NYC, Boston, and Philly people as a whole. Oh ..... and The Dutch.

ETA: PS: My oldest uncle, who was a POW in the Philippines .... he hated the Japs until his dying day. He despised them with every fiber of his being.

Japanese war atrocities are legendary for their savage cruelty and inhuman treatment of other human beings.

War is war but you gotta draw the line somewhere.

Someimes you gotta fight fire with fire and beat the savagery out of your mortal enemies. It's been that way for millenia. Forgiveness is one thing. You can forgive and still serve justice.

Neither you nor I are deserving of the forgiveness God offers

It isn’t about deserve, it’s about Grace. I pray that I do not get what I deserve

I just got done watching a documentary on the Battle of Okinawa during WW2. The Japanese were taught to fear the American soldiers. So that they would fight to very end. They would strap hand grenades to women and children in order to take out American soldiers. After watching that and knowing the casualties that would have occured if we invaded mainline Japan. I would have dropped the atomic bombs myself. The Japanese have no one to blame but their fanatic government for what happened to them.
