Harbor Freight Jackhammers

Anyone have any experience with the 46 lb or 66 lb electric jackhammers? I have to remove 3”-4” concrete driveway. I’ve seen videos of the larger hammer and I’m sure it will do the job. But I’m an old dude and 20lb difference would be huge if the smaller one will work.

Probably not much difference in price. Also some future projects

How many square feet is the driveway? Jackhammering up concrete is hard, hard work, and if there’s highway mesh, it’s going to be even harder for you to do manually. You can likely find someone to demo with a bobcat and haul away for less than you think. When I had my driveway replaced, they did the break out and haul away for $1/SF.

I have a guy coming next week to give me an estimate. About 650 sf. If it’s only $650 that’d be tempting. About to retire and rather than join a health club…I’ve done this before but 30 years ago when I was 34. I’m an old boomer who hates to pay for something I can do myself I guess. I’m pretty handy and in good shape and like the challenge.

Do you have some sort of equipment to move it after you break it up? After you hammer it you're still left with 650 sqft of concrete, just in various size pieces.
You're talking about busting up and removing like 35k pounds of shite.

I'd rent one first. Before that I'd get quotes on someone else doing that job.

I’ll have plenty of time. Also have a 22 year old son at lsu with friends who I can employ to move the broken concrete if necessary. If it’s only going to cost $1000 or less to hire out the job I may. In the meantime back to YouTube to compare the heavier vs lighter hammers.

There is a thread somewhere on this from long ago, cheap HF tools. I wouldn’t buy a large one, always rent it for one off jobs. I do however, have one semi large electric breaker I bought from HF that you can’t kill. It’s an absolute beast that will also break your wrist if you aren’t careful.

You need to figure out disposal. Dumpsters are around $500/ each and they can’t hold the weight you have so you will need multiple.
As said breaking it up is one thing, then moving it to dispose, then disposing it.

I have used the 66lb Hercules(too many times) and it does the job well.
If the driveway has wire in it, the 66lb jackhammer is no good for you. It will go through down to the dirt and you have to fight to get it out because the wire does not allow for expansion. If there is no wire, it would work well.
A 66lb jackhammer is heavy and quite hard to move around after 20 minutes of work.
Good luck.

old boomer .... pretty handy
Careful with those joints! While you're fit enough for the task, heavy repetitive tasks can really damage an older person's arms, shoulders, wrists, hands, etc. You may not know you've screwed something up for several months after you are through. Shortly after retirement I did too much paver work... just simple pick up and lay down a couple of 1000 times. Now hand surgery is on my to do list.

Thanks all for the insight. Will certainly consider all the good advice before moving forward.

Don't be too proud ol fella, you've earned hiring someone. No shame in it.
I'm almost 40 and I will hire out certain things. Know your limits, and make best use of your time.

I think it’s around $2.75 sq ft to bust it and haul it off. They’ll have it done in a couple of hours. Maybe faster depending on how far they to go to dump it.

Holy shite that's a steal for the labor that entails

You don’t do this commercially by hand. You bring in some bobcat type equipment with a jackhammer on it and then a front loader to scoop it up.

The post above is your reality check.
I self perform 99% of my own projects for “fun and exercise” and I often overestimate my abilities and end up pushing myself further than is healthy.
I take on all kinds of crazy projects and would never consider self performing this demo. It would probably be easier to single handily form, place and finish the new driveway.
