Algorithms are tearing us apart

I'm a liberal. I'm friends with many liberals and many conservatives. I think we largely want the same things and we have some differences how to get there. I'm for small government. Less regulation so housing costs can go down. Progressive income tax. Gun control. Health care for everyone and more affordable heatlhcare for everyone. Conservatives have policy differences from me for sure.
I think we have algorithms in social media that polarize us because it's more profitable. Anger gets more clicks. I'm a susceptible to it.
On this board there are people saying they can't live in the same country as me. Some hinting liberals should be killed. Some saying kicked out of the country. My conservative friends don't come to these same conclusion about me.
We all need to be careful what the algorithms from big tech are doing to us.

Edit: liberals said they would move to Canada when POTUS won in 2016. Why didn’t anyone move?

Yes, rage sells. It doesn't even have to be current or verifiable rage, as long as it is a short video clip and fits the character limit. People choose their lane, pick their preferred sources, and follow them religiously, often without question.
The problem is that people do not recognize the role they are playing. Their sources are just puppet masters who largely don't give shite about the overall theme. They just farm engagement, and keeping their followers angry and clicking for more is a means to that end.
However, every person has the ability to parse out the bullshite. Most are too lazy to do so. That reality is seen on social media, even this board, every single day.

social media and 24 hour news channels have shredded the fabric of our society.
everyone really believes that half of the country wants to torture them to death or put them in camps, meanwhile just about everyone is just trying to pay their bills and stay afloat.

You want small government and less regulation, but you want more taxes and for the goverenment to provide healthcare for everyone. These things don't equate.

I agree there are people that profit from anger and hatred between opposing political viewpoints, and they stoke that fire in order to benefit from it. This is a real problem that we should all be wary of.
I do not agree that “we” largely want the same things though. We need less spending and less taxes, no changes to gun laws, get rid of subsidized government health care (this is actually ruining people taking care of themselves), and do not allow government control of speech.
I would hope that I could discuss these things with someone and not have any fear that either of us were going to be killed-we agree on that.
