Just looking for a short list to narrow down the housing search (for a family not for a young single guy or gal)

If it’s cheap you are in the wrong neighborhood

Oak Hills. Great location and lots of young families with kids playing in the neighborhood.

What's your price range?

Bought an older home in Jefferson Terrace last year, I haven't had any complaints yet about the neighborhood. Very quiet, mostly older folks with a younger-middle aged families moving in.

Southdowns or almost neighborhood in 70808

It all depends on your commute, and whether or not you can afford private schools.

Westdale, Garden District, Mid City are nice. Near the University Lake or Southdowns as well. The neighborhoods off Highland Rd from Lee Dr to and including Kenilworth are great. If those are too expensive, Tara and Broadmoor (stay as west as you can) are underappreciated and great for traffic.
If you like St George, down Highland Rd West of I-10 is not too bad. Maybe something like Oak Hills Place would be a good budget choice in the area.

Goodwood, Hundred Oaks, pretty much anything off Highland south of LSU, Sevenoaks, Bocage, College Town (LSU Ave).....all very good.

I'm assuming you mean middle class neighborhoods because all the expensive neighborhoods are nice my favorite being University Lakes.
My favorites today are different than what they would've been 20 years ago as some neighborhoods declined.
Garden District, Tara, and basically any neighborhood in close proximity to the Wholefoods are where I say you should go.

There's no way anyone can give you a great answer without knowing your budget, location of job, and what you need depending on size and age of family.
