The Trump administration does not want to override state and local control, but Bessent suggested the White House is exploring options such as standardizing zoning codes, lowering closing costs, and even granting tariff exemptions for construction materials.

The remarks come as Trump seeks to position "affordability" as a centerpiece of Republicans' 2026 midterm platform. The "No Tax on Tips" provision in the recently signed One Big Beautiful Bill Act is part of that push, with the administration also eyeing housing relief as a key pillar.

Bessent expressed optimism about the broader economy, predicting a "big economic pickup in 2026," buoyed by Federal Reserve rate cuts and Trump's reciprocal tariffs — though he acknowledged uncertainty over how businesses will pass costs on to consumers.

A full transcript of Bessent's interview with the Examiner is expected later Tuesday.

I like what I read somewhere on the internet lately about perhaps having "affordable housing" restricted to US citizens only. I'd be down with that.

Having the meddling from the Obama years makes me reticent to explore even more top down meddling.

They may need to keep private equity firms and wealthy speculators from jumping in and taking advantage of depressed housing prices...

He’s wrong on this one.

How about preventing hedge funds and companies like Blackrock from buying up everything.

True... but I think HUD is going to attempt to time limit section 8- I believe the phrase used was that housing assistance was to be a trampoline instead of a hammock.

It looks like Admin47 is coming up with a multi-pronged approach to the housing situation- I hope they don't go all socialist feel good with it. I think they won't.

To help housing, the "help" has to come on the supply side. Increase supply and youll have better prices.

Focusing on rates and buying power will only raise costs and exacerbate problem.

Eliminate capital gains tax on builders of single family homes is a start.

Not necessarily... there is discussion and dissent in this thread. Red isn't lockstep.

Just give a big tax credit for a first time homebuyers and maybe a slightly smaller credit for buying another house. It should only apply to individuals, not corporations. Also do something to lower the price of lumber.

I think this is where intervention goes sideways. We always intervene...on the buyer side, not the supplier side

So with the bail/CJ issue, voting, and now this, can we finally admit that Trump/MAGA are opponents of states rights? What else will it take?

Literally out of the fricking Obama playbook my god.

Do you want to revisit the response when the Obama admin also wanted to create a federal housing affordability policy that involved coopting local and state zoning codes?
