Compliments

1. The entire defense, from the staff to the players, were downright phenomenal. I honestly can’t just single out a particular player or two. It was a total team effort that dominated what is supposed to be a high powered offense.

2. Nuss playing a clean game with no forced errors was nice to see. He had me worried early in the game. There were a few moments where he appeared a bit rattled and started throwing off his back foot. Subconsciously I was waiting for him to force a throw resulting in a pick. He really settled in and played mistake free football.

3. Aaron Anderson is WR1. Feels like we’ve been waiting for him to arrive and I think this is the year we see him with consistent production.

4. The revamped OL really held their own against a defense with multiple supposed first round draft picks.

Concerns

1. Chris Hilton might be the biggest WR bust in the history of LSU football. If not for his fumble and drive killing penalty, I wouldn’t have known he saw the field.

2. Brian Kelly’s decision making could have cost them in another big week 1 matchup by once again leaving 3 points on the field. The lack of killer instinct to put the game away at the end needs to be fixed.

3. Piggy backing on my second concern, the confusion/unpreparedness on offense coming off of a timeout is flat out unacceptable. I get it’s the first game, but there’s no reason to look that confused to run a play after a timeout.

Bonus

Brown caught it, frick that officiating crew.

The defense is solid. I’m a little nervous about not having a deep threat. That’s probably my biggest concern. Everything else was good enough to be really good this year.

Yeah a couple of missed assignments but overall they played as well as you could expect a new unit to in that environment.

Tough to figure out in game 1 against a good defense but he definitely looked good. I think Brown and Green are going to be crucial going forward as well.

Im wondering if the uncertainty of the OLine limited the play calls for a long ball? Most everything seemed to be quick passes. Again, as I’ve said in another thread, I’m not a coach, just thinking about loud

Compliments:

Defense overall looks very good.
Perk is back and Whit too.
Delaney looks legit and Woodland looking great as well.

Nuss seems to be more under control and happy to see him run once at least to keep defense honest.

Anderson and Brown look good.

Durham still showing burst.

DL great in the run game.

Complaints:
Coaching decisions.

Sloan is still awful and likely will hold this team back.

OL still can’t run block to save their lives.

DL on its own wasn’t very good at getting pressure on the QB.

Special teams still looks mediocre to bad.

I don't know what to make of Hilton. We know he is capable of big plays, but he seems to always be going through some mental hurdle. Always looks like he's pouting from getting yelled at or just going through the motions at times.

Somebody’s gotta step up. Everyone wants Hilton to be that guy and he needs to be that guy.

But we have some serious weapons in the short pass game. And the big tight end has gotta get going better. He can actually be a deep threat.

Somebody’s gotta step up if we’re gonna be a championship team. But I think the ability is there.

Compliments:

The defense has more fight and fire than we've seen in a decade. It may not be the most talented at every position as, say, 2011 had, but a lot of playmakers and the role players have grit.

Offense has playmakers everywhere and there just needs to be an identity developed and improved flow on that side of the ball

Complaints:

I'm still not certain of our ability to gain 3 yards on the ground when we need 3 yards on the ground.

But - many of my niggling complaints appear coachable - still a couple of missed tackles that could get cleaned up (much better than just a couple of years ago - light years better). Couple of missed assignments on the O Line could get cleaned up (and should improve as the line gels). Some soft coverages that may be as much the scheme as the play. Still burning TOs in the first half.

Overall - Game 1 performance gets a solid A-minus.

The only big concern was coaching not kicking the FG and not taking the points in a defensive slugfest. Head scratcher

Compliments
1) Sloan sort of improved as a play caller and we definitely improve me run/pass blocking scheme.
2) Baker is the best defensive hire we have had in 15 years

Concerns
1) Cooley will get picked on in coverage and he’s not very sure tackler
2) BK game management
3) Sloan key situational play calling

Compliments:

We are 1-0
We have what looks like a legit defense
O line held up better than expected against hopefully the best D line we see all year
Nuss made good decisions all night

Concerns:
BK and his continued tendency to not take easy points early in games
If we have an injury in the O line and Chester has play for an extended time we are in trouble
Officiating, worst game by refs since AU in 06, thankfully we were able to overcome it

Let’s see if adjustments are made to maybe get him more involved. We have a lot of weapons. Maybe staff ide tidied some areas of weakness and went with those.

This is the biggest one even more than the D. If he can limit his INTs then this will be a good season.

Another big one. Why can’t we go out and win a game instead of playing it safe at the end?

Our offense was better and more prepared than our coaches had confidence in them

Was pleasantly surprised with the punning game both punning and punt returns.

Ramos will be solid, hopefully he didn’t hurt himself.

The improvement on defense I expected, but not as much as it was. Very happy there.

Clemson kept a very very deep safety all game. We took a few shots when we could formation him over to one half of the field. 2 to TD Green and obviously the no call TD. They schemed that away from us, but we hit the skinny post to Anderson under the deep safety a few times.

I know Bauer Sharp was a little rusty this game but he can be soooo dangerous. 6’5 240. And Green. These guys are so dangerous and will open up the deep ball in time.
