My only concern from last night is the dog shite conservative play calling at the end

We definitely played very conservatively on offense and tried “not to lose” instead of going for the win and thrusting the dagger.
Kelly and Sloan need to show some balls and trust our guys on offense to get a first down when the game is on the line. We shouldn’t have played for a punt on the last drive and forced our defense to make yet another stop.
That kind of pussy conservative play calling makes you blow the big games at the last minute. We’s seen that too man times
Please grow a pair, BK & Joe Sloan.

That was “playing to not lose” rather than “playing to win” BUT, I feel like by that point, they trusted the Defense

You do realize you’re saying this to the coach with more wins than any other active coach in football right?

Irrelevant. Everyone is capable of making mistakes.
Also, Kelly had never won a championship or big bowl game of any kind. He still has things to prove to the nation.

They had no answer for our defense. I had no issue putting the game in their hands

Like the 3 quick passes to ju’juan in a row bc they wouldn’t adjust?
Our defense was smothering them. If we catch the punt on the 2 yard line, or our punter actually punts it to the right side instead of the middle away from coverage. They’re going 70 yards not 50.

The last bit was frustrating but overall they coached well. I wish they'd taken the 3 at the end of the first half. Being up 2 scores at the very end would have made the conservative play calls make sense.

I’ll bet you bitched when conservative Kelly passed up a chip shot FG to go for it on 4th down too?

No, I understand that. I just mean the play calling was super conservative, but to your point, he’s making millions to coach football while I am not

Was very odd after showing the clip of BK saying we need to have killer instinct and finish the game off
Posted on 8/31/25 at 9:58 am to cbree88
Didnt we throw on first down of our last drive? It may not be overly aggressive but didn’t feel it was too conservative.

Can’t fault BK for going conservative at the end, even though one or two first downs wins it. The D was rolling enough to trust them to win it.
But BK needs to let the O operate from the first snap. These conservative limited playbook starts are basically giving possessions away.
You can see the calls change as soon as the cuffs come off.

That is exactly what BK did against USC last year and it cost us the game. He was on there screaming after that USC game calling out the fact that the team played scared at the end. HE DID THE EXACT SAME THING AT THE END OF CLEMSON GAME. We won, but that was dangerous what he was doing.
frick around and find out, and we almost did.

This was what Brian Kelly talked about finishing a game the last couple of years but I was pissed to watch the last series. Thank god Blake Baker is a legit defensive coach. Gave Clemson the ball back at midfield with 2 min and 2 timeouts.

I don’t like the conservative approach either. It would have been better to secure a two-score advantage to seal the game. However, given how the defense performed against their offense in the second half, I can understand the rationale behind the coach’s decision—and it did work in the end. We should not do this to a team with an explosive offense.

I don't understand the downvotes Kelly played our last offensive series like he was playing to lose not win. He wasn't trying to FINISH (his own words)but playing to hopefully win.

I agree. They also went conservative on defense. Made for an exciting end though.

I wasn’t thrilled about that but I understood it with how well the defense was playing.
My biggest issue last night was BK, ONCE frickING AGAIN, leaving points on the board early in the game.
We won so it’s easy to ignore, but those 3 points were looming large towards the end.
He does that all the time and it’s maddening.
Game 1, on the road vs a top 5 team, they get the ball to start the second half….take the fricking points.

They were in a hostile environment with a defense that was on fire. Everyone talks the trope about not playing not to lose but up by 7 and all the pressure on Clemson forcing them to beat them and not giving them new life with a pick, fumble, or extra clock time with 3 incompletions was the right call. Minus the big return off the punt it worked exactly how it was planned.

No we almost didn’t. They were within FG range but the defense was playing lights out. They didn’t score a single point in the second half.
Kelly knows what he has and my only gripe was not taking the points at the end of the half. That alone would have changed everything last night in the second half being up two scores.
Maybe nuss changed the play but I didn’t like it. If you go for it then at least throw to the end zone in my opinion
Two score game would have given some breathing room
