Any reason not to get a AWD suv over standard FWD?

Just cost. AWD is awesome. There isn't an inherent reliability issue with AWD, just some higher maintenance issues. Tires have been the main issue with ours. Sob eats tires compared to a regular FWD sedan.
That said, my wife will always have an AWD vehicle if I can help it. Its so much safer and easier to drive in bad weather. I'll never admit it infront of her but I like that stupid thing a lot.

I put my truck in AWD when I'm at the hunting lease. Sometimes I forget to put it back to 2WD. Definitely notice a difference in gas mileage as well. Everyone with AWD drive vehicles complain about tires.

Right, the fuel mileage is usually worse than a comparable FWD vehicle. It just all around costs more. More up front, more tires, more fuel, more maintenance. Regardless, im a huge fan of awd. If my truck had it I'd absolutely use it all the time.

Wife has an AWD Pilot. Honda has probably the best AWD system in the industry. My Ridgeline is a BE AWD. I love both. Helps on rainy days when streets are slick. My Ridgeline pulls my 17ft tracker bass boat out of my lake and has never spun a tire.

My wife has an AWD Honda Pilot. Its great on wet roads. There is some maintenance to do on the rear end every 15,000 miles change the gear oil. That's about it.

My wife has a AWD telluride(same car) it is fantastic. No tire issues. When she comes to the camp it handles slick roads better than my 4x4 truck.

For fuel efficiency yes. But it’s a part time system so that makes sense.
I find Subaru’s system is better in terms of vehicle handling.

I prefer to select 4wd when I need it, and also prefer 2sp transfer case to be able to have “direct” or “low” when I want/need more power/torque applied…

wife drives an AWD 4Runner and aside from an alternator and routine maintenance haven't had any issues with it through 155,000 miles

Subaru has the awd thing down pat. Short of rock climbing, an outback with good tires is just about as capable an off road vehicle as you can get.

Daughter has an Acura MDX

Son has a Sequoia
I have a Tundra.
Being in Memphis burbs we do see some snow. Peace of mind if they need it is absolutely worth it.
My son definitely needed 4wd in Jan when he was headed back to Fayetteville for school. He got caught in a bad snow storm but took his time and made it fine.
I tell them constantly if they are on bad roads, awd/4wd helps to go but it won’t help you stop. Take your time.

I've always thought of AWD as sort of a gimmick.
It doesn't do what a 2wd drive can do particularly well
It doesn't do what a true 4wd can do particularly well
You pay for "4wd" when you don't really need it and you don't have real 4wd when you do need it.

What does it do better than a 4wd capable vehicle?
You're AWD all the time, so maintenance, wear and tear, and you don't necessarily need AWD for the large majority of driving situations. So you're incurring that expense for nothing.
When an AWD application is warranted, sure it's there and it works, but it doesn't work any better than a true 4WD and is actually much more limited than a true 4WD.
Point being it is stuck in the middle of not doing anything particularly well, and costing more in the process.

20 years ago I'd have told the OP reliability was the reason, but in 2025 that's not really the case.
