Hershel Walker trade vs Micah Parson trade

The only similarities in the two trades is that they both were young and Dallas' best player, Hershel was 27 and Micah is 26.
In 1989, Dallas Traded Hershel to Minnesota for 5 players and Minnesota's 1st, 2nd and 6th pick in the 1990 draft
LB Jesse Solomon,
LB David Howard,
CB Issiac Holt,
DE Alex Stewart and
RB Darrin Nelson
What made the trade so great is that there were conditional picks attached to each of the players if they were cut by Feb 1,1990. Minnesota clearly did not believe that Dallas would cut the players but they cut 4 of them and traded Darrin Nelson to the Chargers. Here's what they got from Minnesota in addition to the original 3 picks:
1st round in 91 for cutting Solomon
2nd round in 91 for cutting Howard
1st round in 92 for cutting Holt
2nd round in 92 for trading Nelson
3rd round in 92 for cutting Stewart
Here are the players Dallas picked in the draft with those picks:
RB Emmitt Smith
DT Russell Maryland
CB Clayton Holmes
CB Kevin Smith
S Darren Woodson
For the Parson trade, Dallas received 2 future 1st round picks and DL Kenny Clark
There is definitely a difference in the two trades in that Jimmy was calling the shots and was a genius in talent evaluation and trade negotiations whereas Jerry is just a PR guy who thinks he's a great GM. I will give Jerry this, he knows how to keep himself and the Cowboys front and center in the news which I think is the only thing he really cares about.

The trade isnt as bad as everyone is making it out to be. The Cowboys run defense was awful last year (allowed 137 rush yards per game) and they had a bottom 5 defense in yards allowed.
I dont think Clark is gonna improve the run defense all by himself, just like Parsons couldn't make their defense good by himself.

As a Cowboys fan, I agree, they were 28th in total defense last year, not worth breaking the bank for Micah even though he's a difference maker. They already tied themselves to Dak and CeeDee with gigantic ridiculous contracts, they will have to lay in that bed for a while. Maybe they can find another Micah in the next few drafts or trade up for some meaningful players but I'm not holding out much hope. Jerry said in the Cowboys Netflix documentary that he doesn't want to give up the GM position or criticism that comes with it, he enjoys the pain, it's evident he doesn't care about the pain the fans have been in for over 30 years. He bought them for 160 million and now they are worth 12.8 billion so I'm sure he's enjoying it all the way to the bank

And NFC Central trade partners.
And multiple first rounders.
And Walker had a secretary named Parsons and Parsons had a secretary named Walker.

The Saints sending picks for Steve Walsh helped Dallas besides the Walker trade.

You can get a VERY good interior lineman for like $12-$15 million a year. 26 year old all pro edge rushers don’t grow on trees.
Jerry is feeling himself from that doc and thinks he pulled Hershel 2.0, but in reality he just traded away an elite player at a premium position for 2 picks in the 20s and a defensive tackle in his late 20s

I've be fine giving them the 32nd pick in the next two drafts

It's pretty crazy what the Vikings forked over to get Walker. He was an awesome player, but dang. Roger Craig was putting up the same numbers from '86-88.

Watch the Packers have a bad season… that earns the Cowboys a top 5 pick… been long enough… the world wants to see the Cowboys great again… not me personally I’m a life long Saints fan… but I’m from Monroe and if the Cowboys are good my weekend trips back home during the season are great

An analysis like this that only considers the in field aspect of this trade and ignores the salary cap aspect misses the entire point.
Dallas has tons of salary already tied into 2 players. It would be problematic to do that with a 3rd…especially one setting the market as high as it’s being set.
The value Dallas received is a very much based on the fact that GB had to sign him to that deal.

The cap is going to be like $40 million higher by 2027. The deal was in line with top end defenders and fine and they can cut Dak after ‘27 for a one year cap hit. This move was dumb, there’s no two ways around it

great trade for dallas. the guy was going to be way overpaid and crush their salary cap.

He probably thought this would prove he did the Walker trade so he could win the Netflix documentary.
