Amtrak Mardi Gras. Check out the federal subsidies to open & operate.

$179M in federal subsidies funded track upgrades and negotiations to launch Amtrak’s Mardi Gras train from Mobile to New Orleans. In addition, $7M in annual subsidies covers operating costs, with federal and state support, to keep the twice-daily service running.
Seems excessive to me.

They need to get it running to where it connects with the Florida trains that run up and down the East Coast. That would actually be useful.

It's BS. Waste of money. Our Congressmen and Senators should be ashamed. It will be a novelty for a few months. If passenger rail for a run from Mobile to NO would be profitable, then the private railroad would run it.

Dumbest idea I've heard of in a long time...

Do you feel the same way about Essential Air Service?

Does it have a shuttle running from Mobile to Orange Beach/Gulf Shores? If not, it's pretty useless.

Mass transit is nothing but a give away to well-connected insiders.

Seems like a company making a capital investment to me?

5% of the populations uses something that 100% pays for. The ferries are no different.

Yeah. But those get heavily used
Just subsidize a bus to mobile at much much lower cost if the need is there

Doesn’t the federal government own Amtrack?

Nevermind, not going to get into its charter standing.

The burgers they serve in the cafe car cost $80 to make, but they sell for $12.

A New Orleans route that went to Mobile, and from there to a train to Orlando would really make me want to jerk on junk, instead of having to drive my family to Disney every few years.
