Has the little league base running “controversy” been discussed?

Apparently there’s a controversy with one of the teams base running tactics taking advantage of the rules. If the pitcher isn’t on the mound, they have the runner dance around between first and second to try and get a play on him while the runner on 3rd scores.

quote:

Once the ball is returned to the pitcher, the pitcher is on the mound, and the Catcher is in the Catcher’s box, the base runner is not permitted to advance further.”

Fairfield intentionally puts pressure on its opponent to get the ball to pitcher, on the mound, by dancing somewhere between first and second base.

If the defense tries to get the runner on his way to second, the runner on third has a free path to home. If the defense tries to keep the runner at third, the runner on first has a free path to second.

Okay...so, what's the controversy?

This. When I played Little League last century, any time a team got a runner at first and third, they always sent the runner to try to force a throw to second. If the other team threw to second, the runner on third was breaking for home.

It wasn't controversy. It was strategy.

This tactic really isn’t any different than something like a coach telling a runner to stretch an extra base. They’re both basic pressure moves intended to rattle an unprepared or expose a poorly executing team

This specific move has also been around for eons and there’s a formula to mitigate it. If kids are either too stupid or too bad to make the play, they can cry harder

There isn’t one. And nobody thinks there is. The OP just wanted people to see the title and say something.

I mean. I saw an article that said the strategy is sparking a rules debate that could lead to changes lol

But hey, nice try at your gotcha lol

This ends when the next hitter up gets one in the earhole, every time they try the dance.

Yes, you may lose that game, but you start sending the message.

The unwritten rules of baseball were never there just for the shits and giggles.

Run the guy back to the base. Not very difficult.

You throw it to your short stop who is going to throw the runner out at home.

I was watching a replay of one game where the fielders just melted down and they scored like 8 runs in a row and just kept getting the guy on first to 2nd. Crazy is that if you give up the first run from 3rd and get the out on the guy from first, you then have 1 out and zero runners on base.

Instead, they were shell shocked and just ended up with no outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd like 8 batters in a row.

Baseball “unwritten rules” are by far the dumbest thing in all of sports lol

Doing this isn’t against the unwritten rules. We did this 20+ years ago from the time I was about 12 through high school.

What’s the next controversy for little league, a team kept advancing on past balls?

My kids softball am has done this for years.

Runner on third, less than 2 outs, batter walks, never slows down headed to second

If the fielders would just run the guy back to first base there wouldn’t be a problem. Run him back to first and if the runner from third tried to score throw him out.

Also it’s little league and the runner on 3rd is probably scoring anyway with less than 2 outs, so you could also just take the out at 2nd and kill their strategy

Certainly ways to mitigate it. Pitcher squares the runner back to 1B while paying attention to the runner at 3B or having a cue to throw home. Or, pitcher gives it to the SS that can see the runner at 3B, who eases the runner back to 1B while paying attention to the runner at 3B.

The problem is the cat and mouse can pretty much go on forever. The pitcher/ball still has to go back to the mound, which means the runner at 1B can re-start the cat and mouse as many times as he wants.

On defense, you either go for the out at 1B/2B and not worry about the runner at 3B or you just concede 2B.

I hate the play.

ETA: The best way to shut it down is to get the ball back to the pitcher fast and have him get on the mound. You can't even start that cat and mouse game when a team does that. Easier said than done, though.

I think Japan won quite a few LLWS titles this way.

They were always undersized, but crowded the plate, drew walks and immediately put pressure on the defense BECAUSE by and large everyone knows LL fielding can be bad, egregiously error-prone and sloppy.

Japan would score 4 runs in the 1st with 1 bloop single.

Was expecting to open this to read about the team tipping off pitches from 2nd base.
