The death of the 24/7 stores

I don't like this.
24/7 stores obviously still exist in larger areas, but I remember when Walmart in Ellick was 24/7. It was awesome being able to grab something.
It's 5 AM, I'd like to knock out grocery shopping right now. No grocery store opens until 6 AM.

I do believe Covid stopped most Walmarts from being 24 hours

They were till c19
Start with Regan in 1980
Big stores use overnight to restock while the rest of us slept. Remember you had 3 channels (ABC / CBS / NBC) + Public TV till Ronnie got rid of the "Fairness Doctrine" and they were all off the air after the late news and such. Ronnies terms gave rise to MBA's and "Greed is Good" so the MBA's figured letting customers in at night while they were restocking meant added revenue.
Sunday "Blue Laws" also went away (tho many believe the Blue Laws were for booze, it actually was from automobile business as banks were closed on Sunday so no way to sell cars on credit) so the 24 / 7 model became the norm by the 90's.

Sam Walton served the common folk and implemented policy based on points just like you express. Hard working people work hard day or night as the need arises. Albeit as the ‘almighty dollar’ now drives the corporate machine, the numbers just don’t add up for staying open all night. Not to mention that the potential for crime has risen as well.

I'm sure they have run the numbers and I don't know what I'm talking about, but I'd imagine that there are 2nd order effects from staying open all hours. I'm more likely to shop at a store that stays open 24/7 even in the daytime because I've associated them with a store that meets my needs.
I've had this same thought about stores that lock up their liquor. if I have to press a button to get liquor, I'm going somewhere else from then on into the future. That also means that if I need 5-10 things, liquor being one of them, they're not just losing out on the liquor revenue, they're also losing out on revenue on other items.
Locking items up has never made sense to me from an outside perspective. Maybe if I could see the losses on paper I would realize that no amount of convenience shopping could make up for the losses.

Before Covid you could count on all Waffle Houses being 24/7. Now that is a rarity. Fonk Covid!

It was inevitable that they would be bought out by 24/7/365.
Just as it was inevitable that 24/7/365 would be subsumed by 24/7/365/to-infinity-and-beyond…

I don't know man. Seems like being open at 3 a.m. isn't exactly a money maker.
I kinda liked it when stores were all closed on Sunday, but that ship sailed in the 80s.

You mean the laws that went back to the colonial days….
Worst shite ever… you couldn’t buy hardware on Sundays….
I get it’s the Lords day, but sometimes you need to work on shite on Sunday.
But, if a company wants to close on Sunday, they have every right to do, Kudos to CFA for doing so.
I always laughed at the booze thing on Sundays as well, you could buy beer but not liquor. We were headed to Lake Fork on a Sunday, stopped in Shreveport to pick up some stuff, put a handle of Jack on the checkout belt, and the lady looked at us like we had two heads, she said, “um sir, we can’t sell you that, it’s Sunday.” Told her I forgot where we were….

Worry not, soon you'll be able to order in a drone delivery from a shadow 24 hr grocery store, and you wont even have to get up from your motorized wheel chair or disconnect your glp1 IV.

When the Elmwood Walmart was open 24 hours we would sometimes hit it after 11, it’s a true pleasure seeing a toddler running around in nothing but a diaper at 12 in the morning.
Where I coined the phrase”Walmart baby”… seeing a toddler with nothing but a diaper on…

Covid also ruined Scruffy referring to himself in the third person... we've lost so much bc of that shite

Ellick
This shite drives me up the wall.
For years I thought there was some
Medium sized town in central LA called Ellick, but for the life of me I could never find Ellick on a map or a road sign.
It was only recently I learned that Ellick is some bastardized country bumpkin mis-pronunciation of Alexandria .
Alex, or even Alleck might have made some sense.
Ellick is just beyond the pale.
