What’s the best way to sell a car these days?

I’m listing my car for sale rather than going through a dealership. It’s a Volvo S-60. I had a dealer offer me a $12,000 trade-in credit for a car that, per kbb, is worth $16,500-$18,500. What says the OT about the best way to sell a car privately? It’s a good, safe car that would be good for a new driver, however the future cost of maintenance may be an issue for them.

Obviously. I’ve not had any issues with the car at all, but knowing European cars’ reputation as being costly to maintain, this might give some buyers pause. I wouldn’t put it in the same class as BMW or Mercedes relative to maintenance costs, but it’s not as easy and inexpensive to maintain as a Toyota Camry or Honda Accord. Just giving the OT my thoughts.

CarMax has been pretty competitive and fair lately. Its also a very simple process and you can possibly get your check the same day. If you are trying to squeeze for max value then I'm not sure, maybe marketplace.

Here in South LA you can find a busy intersection and park it there with a sign with your phone number. Be sure to put a price so you don't get a million calls with people asking "How much?" then hanging up

Year, miles, trim, options, condition? KBB is really a bad way to estimate a cars value, a dealer is going to run recent auction pricing or Black Book pricing. KBB can be way, way off.
If you want the most money, aways sell it privately or through a local Volvo repair shop that sells cars. My folks actually just did this a couple months ago, sold an X60 to their shop that does sales. Got a couple thousand more than dealer offer.

Some cars like Toyoya suvs carry a strong used car market and are easy to sell private party.
Some cars like European luxury imports are known for being maintence nightmares and are really hard to sell directly.
I told think you'll get the best price listing it online private party but bring a used Volvo isn't going to raise that many eyes. A lot of mechanics won't touch them. The 5cylinders were great but i don't trust the new super/turbo 4 cylinders.

Put it on the corner with a for sale sign!

if kbb is 16,500 at low end i think 15k-16k would be reasonable to accept

Find someone to sell it to and have them do an in and out at the dealership if you can. Save anorher 10% on the $16,000. It’s worth paying the $300 to $500 paperwork fee.

Believe it or not Facebook marketplace.
My wife lists stuff frequently on FB marketplace with a ton of success. She suggested she list a car we were selling there, and we had 9 contacts within the first couple hours. A week later I was at the DMV transferring the title to the first guy who reached out.

You're going to waste your time and sanity trying to sell a used import to get a couple grand more than the dealer was going to give you between trade value and sales tax credit?

I like this idea. I listed it on Autotrader, although I priced it probably a little high, but still lower than the price that Autotrader suggested.
It’s a 2021 S-60 T-5 Momentum AWD with 100,000 miles. It’s been a great car, but wanting something different.

I won't get in to the KBB portion and how inaccurate it can be, but no dealer/reseller will pay you full value for the vehicle because they are going to then have to list is to sell. If they buy it for $16,500 then list it for $16,500 they would actually lose money on the transaction after paying expenses/overhead.
Private sales will almost always bring in more than the dealer is offering because you are cutting on the middleman. But private sales can be a huge PITA because you are now the salesman and have to deal with the moronic general public. Plus there is no telling how long your car will sit unsold.
If you want to go the private route you can try sites light AutoTrader and see if you get any bites. You can also always try a place like Carmax that will give you an offer even if you aren't buying anything form them and see how it compares.

They were really low. Not anywhere near the range of kbb’s value. Granted I understand that Volvo’s aren’t cars that most people seek out, but that may just mean that it takes longer to sell privately.

It's the miles that are killing your offers on this. 25k miles a year is considered very heavy use. Retail with half the miles they are going in the high teens to low 20's. Dealerships probably got those cars wholesale for $16 or $17k. I'd imagine you could probably get around $13-$14k, maybe a little less out of motivated dealer depending on how clean it is. I'd definitely try a Euro shop or Volvo / BMW / Mercedes type dealership, they won't be as afraid of it.
I'd stay far away from Autotrader and the like, there are several scams that are run through there. I'd imagine that 80% or more of the contact that you'll get would be scammers.
