More American women are single than ever before—and it’s costing them big money
By Megan Leonhardt
March 18, 2023
The growing number of single adults helps to normalize Americans’ decisions to remain uncoupled and broaden social trends. In fact, 68% of Americans believe that the stigma of being single is gradually diminishing, according to a recent survey by The Harris Poll. Yet, single women still tend to face more challenges when building wealth.
In fact, Harris finds three-quarters of Americans say that it can be more affordable to be in a relationship—especially when it comes to splitting everyday costs like housing expenses, food prices, or monthly bills.
And all singledom is not created equal, especially when it comes to gender parity. Women face not only a gender wage gap in the U.S.—earning about $0.83 per dollar to men—but they also run up against a wealth gap too. The median household income for married couples was $106,921 as of 2021, according to Census data. Single women earn a median income of $51,168, while single men make $70,525.
But it turns out the wealth gap is actually even wider than the pay gap, according to research from the Federal Bank of St. Louis. Married couples had a median net worth of just over $200,000 in 2019, according to the Federal Reserve’s latest survey of consumer finances. In contrast, single men had a median net worth of $57,000, while single women only accrued $47,000.
While that’s troubling, the Fed’s data includes both women who have never married, as well as those who divorced and may have commingled assets at some point. The St. Louis Fed’s research finds that single women who never married have a lower net worth of about $0.71 cents per one dollar compared to the median never-married man’s wealth, or a wealth penalty of about 29%. The picture gets even more bleak for single women with children.

Who would have thought that pooling assets, earnings and expenses was the way to go?

all this crap falls on deaf ears with me because in my world women are specifically paid more than men for doing the same job.

Can't hit that divorce payout if no one will marry you.

You usually argue that the wealth gap doesn't exist.

I mean if they think high earning men are toxic thats their own fault

as it relates to women being paid less.

The wealth gap exists for women without children, as well.

I imagine that the obvious answer of wealth gap between stable married couples and single people escapes you. Considering that stable married people are invested if increasing their lifestyles and generally are more productive in life versus people that aren’t married for whatever reasons. While yes there are very big earners that are single, women and men alike, they are a much smaller pool of individuals more like the example not the rule. Stable households generally produce healthier stable children that in-turn produce healthier lives.

The choice of field of employment has consequences in that mix.

Women are not paid less for the same job.

It may exist but it’s not because of misogyny as feminist such as yourself imply.
It’s because it is proven over and over again that women are terrible leaders and constantly make poor decisions when put in positions of leadership. They also are far less likely to work 50+ hour weeks. They are also naturally less ambitious and take less risk, and we can go on and on and on.
And from someone that has employed over 80 females in the last 7 years, yall fricking create so many god damn fricking problems out of thin air, almost likes it’s your duty to frick up a good thing.

Decades of brainwashing these little angels to believe that they are all perfect princesses in every way has created a demographic of entitled, delusional, ungrateful, 4’s that think they are 10’s.
So they snub guys in their league and chase the Chads who pump and dump them.
Shitting parenting and Disney fantasy are to blame for this.
Kevin Samuels was a harbinger that was taken from us too soon.

Paid less per hour, week, year ? How are you determining that answer? Are the doing the same work getting paid less or are you judging say a welder pay for 40 hours against a woman who works as a teacher? I know women doctors and lawyers that because of their specialties knock it out the park compared to male colleagues that are less specific in the field. I know women that work in physical therapy that do good compared to men in warehouse jobs who bust their arses. If you have a example of a man & woman doing the same thing for the same amount of time invested but man is making noticeable difference feel free to share
