Posted on H&G board as well, but thought I’d look here too. Looking to build a home in BR area and need someone to draw up the plans. Any recommendations are appreciated. TIA

ETA, I should’ve specified, not in BR but in the greater BR area, definitely well out of town.

I'd recommend a draftsmen or architect. Although I'll do it for $350.

What kind of home are you building? Lot Size, Spec/Custom, SFT Range and estimated budget for the home?

Custom home, between 2300-2600 Sqft
Estimated budget, no more than 420,000 or so.

Not in BR proper.

You’re going to have a hard time with that. Current new construction is near $200/sq ft.

I’d just buy something existing unless you have some super unique need that can’t be met. Aside from price, building is a gigantic pain unless you have tons of hours to monitor.

You have a rough outline already? Or do you have a set of plans that you want modified?

For something you already have an outline on - check with Mellissa Llewellyn in Lafayette. I think her company is Lines Made Simple or something.

If you are starting from scratch - maybe you should find a set of plans you like and buy them, then have them modified. That's sort of what we did.

Plan on putting bars on your windows and a heavy gate out front.
Plan on a couple Belgian shepherds and maybe a Doberman or two.
Plan on installing an extra large gun safe.
Plan on insuring anything of value

Going to be tight.....you may need to boost your budget, especially if you want nicer finishes and decent landscaping.

I appreciate the insight. For added clarity, I can work with less Sqft. Also, I will be doing all the flooring, backsplashes, and showers myself. I know it’s a drop in the bucket but should ease a little bit of the cost.

WBRZ did a story several months ago on a residential designer named Jeremiah Bell who claims he's an architect but isn't: WBRZ Story

The architect board has taken action against him, too, for stealing a real architect's stamp and using it on drawings, so stay away: Archtect Board Disciplinary Action list

I’d recommend a proper architect over a draftsman personally.

This company does most house designs in central Louisiana. They are located in LaSalle parish. They offer 2D and 3D designs. They have done designs in south Louisiana. You can see the prices in the different packages.

Not happening.

House plans online at all the big house plan sites will be your cheapest option ($1000-$2000). The cheapest you can probably find for custom plans will be $1.50/sqtft ($3450-$3,900), but most likely will be more than that.

My Dad paid his way through civil engineering with the GI Bill and doing blueprinting. Mom still has his T-square and a scaled drawing board he used. He and my late sister in the mid 80's drew up the house my parents built that the grandparents finished their lives in and then I spent 20 years in. The 1st house Dad built when got back from Germany and CoE in the mid 50's still has people living in it. His 1st job at Citgo in the late 60's was designing gas stations to fit on odd lots leftover from other constructions so it had to match aesthetics and the odd lot spaces.

Too bad for you he passed 2018, he would probably have drawn it up just for kicks.
