I can’t put my finger on it, but there is something about the Greek system that seems more handy.

The barrels wouldn't even barely get warmed up with 1000.

I'm more of a fan of the Roman wedge myself. When used right it was deadly effective and almost unbeatable

Macedonians easily. Their longer spears made all the difference.

Macedonian phalanx was designed by taking the best part of the other phalanx’s and combining them together. They also had longer Sarissa spears and it was by far the most successful phalanx when it comes to conquering.

So I’ll take it

Without question the Macedonian phalanx was the most successful. Mainly because they changed tactics after all the Greeks had been doing the same thing for generations.

Instead of squares or lines of men, imagine a sledgehammer. Where the handle bends a little while the hammerhead obliterates its opponents side of the line. This along with an absurdly long Sarissa pike that an earlier poster mentioned gave them a great advantage in battle.

Later, Alexander’s cavalry and boldness more than his powerful infantry scored him victories over the Persians.

Of course, none of them could stand up to the Roman manipular system.
