Implanting Tooth on Eyeball Helps Blind Man See Again

(CBC) – A Canadian man can see again after going blind more than two decades ago.
He underwent surgery that uses a patient’s own tooth to help restore their sight.
After going blind nearly 21 years ago, Brent Chapman can see again through his tooth.
Brent Chapman is one of three people who underwent “tooth-in-eye” surgery performed by doctor Greg Moloney and his team in Vancouver for the first time in Canada.

“I feel fantastic,” Chapman said. “Vision comes back, and there’s a whole new world.”
All three patients can now see to different degrees.
The two-part surgery, developed in the 1960s, is a last resort for people with severe corneal blindness.
It involves removing a patient’s tooth, inserting a plastic lens into it, and then stitching the whole thing into the patient’s eye socket.

Why a tooth? Because they consist of the hardest substances humans produce, making them the ideal casing to bridge the lens and using part of a patient’s own body ensures it won’t be rejected.

This is the part that I was not expecting.

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.

I am curious as to why it has to be a tooth.
Could any bone fragment work?

I guess a toothless blind person is just sh*t outta luck.

Makes sense.
Just not what I would think they would try first.
I wonder if they went straight to trying teeth or attempted other options.
How strong does the structure holding the lens really need to be?
It isn’t exactly a high tension/force area of the body.
Really fascinating concept.

In the land of the blind, the tooth-eyed man is king.

Maybe it wasn’t mud when Jesus did it, maybe it was one of his teeth.

Eye for an eye and a tooth for a eye

But you also have to walk around looking like a hell spawn.

I guess they use an eyetooth?
ETA: Damnit harahan.
Eye didn't see it. And that's the tooth

Exactly how much acid did the guy who developed this surgery have to drop in order think of putting someone’s tooth in their eye socket to restore their sight?
