Who educates the young "student" athletes on this matter? Is it the university responsibility? The individual? The parent(s)?
I wonder how soon we start hearing stories, outcry of decent players who never made it professionally but made some money and blew it and now Uncle Sam will want his chunk... and how it will be unfair because they didn't know any better.

I'm sure the school can educate them to a certain extent but they're adults and pros, figure it out. They wanted to be paid (deservedly so) and now there are responsibilities that come with that.
Some will blow everything while others will have a great start in life. That's life

Don’t act like you actually care

1. Who cares
2. All big programs have financial educators on staff, and some states even require it

Cool. You don’t like players getting paid. Great thread.

Yeah. I liked College sports the way it was. I think a College education and all the other perks were more than fair for the student athletes. If you want to get paid go play professionally.

NIL has been around for a while bro.

I agree. We should also cap CEO and doctor pay too.

And where would an 18-year-old do that?

Regarding the school's responsibility, it could be the same people that advise students how to take out 6 figure loans so they can earn a degree that has minimal job opportunities or tops out at $40k-60k a year

Why do we assume almost every athlete is retarded? You do realize the share of first time college attendees receiving athletic scholarships is dropping by the year right?

Most of the state laws allowing NIL also mandate some kind of financial education by the schools.

Some states are allowing middle schoolers to get NIL... that is insane.

Why is it the school’s responsibility to educate players on taxes? They don’t educate other students on tax implications. Enough of the constant hand holding. If they can’t figure them out they can pay an accountant.
They already have states passing laws that state income tax magically doesn’t apply to them but every other worker still has to pay their fair share.

This board assumes billionaire team owners are retarded.
Basically if you dont like NIL, everyone giving it away or receiving it is a moron.
If you dont like womens sports, everyone involved with them is a moron.
I chalk it up to the media convincing people that everyone that doesnt think like them is an idiot that doesn't know what they are doing.

Schools do offer some advice, but it’s up to the kids to follow it. Really comes down to the parents/guardians getting involved and guiding the athletes. Unfortunately, there are a lot of ignorant people that will allow these kids to make poor decisions. I fully expect to see some fallout as described in the OP in the upcoming years when the govt comes for theirs.

Agreed, it was an internship like in other fields. A monthly additional stipend was fine. This is crazy now.
