Fall Break Ideas within USA (9 to 10 Nights)?

Any fall break (second week of October) trip recommendations - US only? We have two kids under 5. Looking to fly to take advantage of one kid being free for a little bit longer..
For previous fall break trips we've flown into Boston and then drove along the Maine coast. We've also flown to California twice and did a LA to San Diego trip and flown into SF for wine country and Highway 1.
We've thrown around possibly flying back into Boston and doing another New England trip, but this time through Vermont and New Hampshire. We've also talked about flying into Boston and driving to Cape Cod. Also talked about an upper New York trip. Driving around Colorado or Utah is something we've also talked about - not sure how the weather is during that time of the year though?
Any recommendations? We're not looking to go to Disney, we also aren't looking for a strictly beach/warm weather trip (think Key West). Also not looking for a southwest trip (AZ, TX, etc.).
Fall foliage would be a plus, but not a must-have. We're small town people and prefer that over larger cities (not against staying in a bigger city for a night or two to fly-in, out of, but would definitely prefer the trip to be small-town centric.

under 5 years old - Durango, Colorado. Ride the train to Silverton. Rent a Jeep BEFORE you arrive in Silverton (they sell out quickly)

This is what I would do. Stop by Ben and Jerry's, Cabot in Stowe, Burlington is nice right on the lake. Weather should be near peak fall season

You could design a really good 9-10 day trip through Upstate NY.
Adirondacks/Lake Placid for foliage and the Winter Olympic site.
Saratoga will be off-season by that time. You have the Revolutionary War battlefield site, horseracing, and plenty of parks to explore.
Cooperstown, if baseball is your thing.
Rochester has the Strong Museum of Play, a fantastic museum for kids tour age and great nostalgia for adults. The city is a little bigger than Baton Rouge but easy to get around and traffic isn't bad. Letchworth State Park, the Grand Canyon of the East, is nearby
Watkins Glen has some great hikes through gorges and at the bottom of Seneca Lake. Corning (CMOG), Elmira, and Ithaca are all nearby.
Niagara Falls- yes the Canadian side is more built up but the American side is fine enough and probably something the kids will enjoy.
You can even consider popping over to Vermont if you travel along the eastern area of NY.

You likely won't find much open/to do in October in Cape Cod.

There are tons of great little towns all over upstate NY, Vermont, Mass and Connecticut. Everything is pretty close to each other too. A 2 hour drive gets you a long ways......and it's always a beautiful drive.

Lot of good ideas so far.
A few not yet mentioned:
- Rapid City, SD area.
- NW Michigan; Sleeping Bear Dunes, Mackinaw Island, UP over to Duluth, MN and ride along Lake Superior to Grand Portage. We did that road trip in October 2023.
- western Mass., the Berkshires area. You could tie that in with a Vermont or NY trip.

Thank you for all of these - we'll look into. Yeah our idea is some kind of New England/east coast trip right now so this is a good start.

October is great for Florida, because it is offseason. Off-season is fall/winter in north Florida, and April-October in south Florida.
You could fly into Jacksonville and start your trip in Fernandina Beach and go through St Augustine, Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach, Vero Beach, and Jupiter. All are relatively small towns with very different personalities and are very walkable, in addition to a variety of beaches.
Because it will be off-season, getting around in all of those places will be as good as it gets.

Boston - Vermont - New Hampshire would be a neat trip and you may catch fall foilage depending on timing
October in Cape Cod is pretty much out of season and a lot of places might start to shut down

Id love to do that, but it wouldn’t be a trip for my wife. Me and my dad are planning a trip out that way (Glacier) for next September/October - very excited about it!

Stayed in Woodstock.
Quiet town.
There is a Rockerfeller house to tour on one end next to a diary. On the other there is a beautiful waterfall.
If you like history, Plymouth Notch is not faraway. Calvin Coolidge was born there and sworn in as president in the middle of the night by his dad after the death of President Harding. The site has several preserved buildings. It is a nice place for a stroll.
