Hard to believe it’s been 9 years. Peak flood day depended on where you were on the Comite and Amite. The Amite River at Denham Springs crested on Sunday August 14, sending the peak of the backwater flooding into the city.

It was the 15th for me. My yard went from dry with water only in the ditches and road to completely under water in one hour. Evacuated that day in a boat with my wife and one year old. That day was insane.

It wasn't just BR. North Louisiana caught hell, too.

Went around the corner to the ditch that backs up into another ditch that backs up into a creek that flows into the Amite River and saw a slow rise. Thought, well this shite ain’t a good. Woke up to water at the doorstep.

I remember cleaning houses after the flooding. That damn smell of the filthy water sitting in someones house will stick with me for the rest of my life. I remember thinking to myself "I would not wish this shite on my worst enemy"

I was in one of those areas which was considered outside the flood zone, it was even classified as having a natural levee. That was one of the big reasons we bought there, and (naively) didn't get flood insurance.

I DGAF if I move to a house on a desert mountain, I'll have flood insurance after having to go through all that shite.

That was a crazy couple of months for BR, you had the officers killed in July then the flood in August.

From the flood I remember a baw rescuing a lady who was probably drunk and her dog from their car.

Thought LSU was a lock for the national championship based on teams winning after disasters. Then Les brought the boys up to Lambeau Field.

I remember a buddy who lived not too far from the amite...the water rose, he was going under, so he had to evacuate, hopscotch driving 2 vehicles through yards to try and get away. He evacuated to a relatives house...

Then the water rose...and that was going under.

So he evacuated to my house...

Then we watched the water creep down the street. Then up the yard...then to the porch.

When we left and went our separate westward ways, it was an inch from going in. I had grabbed the important things i could and evacuated to high ground, driving through yards...all the roads were flooded.

It was madness.

I can still recall it all.

It got me on 8/13... evac'd the family via boat and then were able to drive out of Livingston via Port Vincent since the water hadn't made it south yet. Ended up living at a family member's house until Christmas. Didn't have flood insurance (never again), so it was a stressful time.

We already had water in our house on the 13th. Ended up with 4 ft.

The weeks and months after were a vivid blur. Once the water receded...it was just day after day of finding the friend or loved ones or even strangers who had flooded...go in, muck it out, bust out the drywall, and dump their lives and dreams to rot by the road in the Louisiana summer. Man high mountains of misery

That smell sticks with me still. Countless freezers full of foulness steaming in the heat...waiting for the poor fool that would open them.

Flooded on 08/13/16 north of Denham. No flood insurance, zone X. FEMA actually did come through with some money for repairs.

We lived in a camper in the driveway the rest of the year.

Paid the flood insurance yesterday.

Was leaving my parents the night of the 13th
My dad told me to watch the water at the end of their street as it didn’t drain fast
Went right into it & flooded my car
Was a blessing because if I’d made it back to my apartment me & my dog would have been screwed

It’s sad seeing houses that are still abandoned just rotting away

I remember. We were headed to Denham to meet with family for my daughter’s bday. One called and said the weather will be bad to not go, so we took her to dinner here in Metairie. Little did we know by the time is was over, 3 family members would lose their homes and 2 struggled to get out by rescue. It is still surreal today. Just 2 days prior, I had been in BR helped my daughter settle into her new apt for LSU. It was already gray and rainy. Who knew what was to come. I’m so sorry for any of you who had to go through that.

Horrible memories.
My parents had paid for flood insurance for 32 years but my mom cancelled theirs the year before because she was tired of paying it. She didn’t tell any of us that she cancelled it.

On Thursday evening I was reading that the Amite would crest near them in Denham on Sunday so I called a u haul place by me tk rent a truck for pick up early Saturday morning. I think it was Thursday night that another round of insane amount of rain fell north of Denham.

My mom called me early Saturday morning to tell me not to drive to them because water was coming down their street. They grabbed the few things they could and drove out with water up to the bottom of the SUV they were in. They got 7 feet of water in the house and lost everything.

rode is out in greenwell springs about 100 yards from the Amite. every house in our neighborhood flooded except for 5 or 6. we were one of the few to not flood. water came about an inch from the weep holes. some houses in our neighborhood got 5 feet, some 5 inches....
