And it looks better than most cgi animation we see today.

The Japanese were used to more detailed and complicated animation than there was in the US back then. The comic books and the cartoons were both like that.

Ghost in the Shell too. Two of my favorites in my 4K collection.

Saw a YouTube video on this topic. They showed how an artist spent weeks on a background image for a shot in Akira, it was like a 5 second shot and they spent weeks creating an extremely detailed background. Crazy stuff.

Anime is like 98% still frame with 2% moving. It’s very economical and the art in the frames is superb but the “animation” is less impressive than its contemporaries (by design).

I mean even that clip in the OP isn’t mind blowing “animation” for the time. Pay attention to how much is just there and not doing anything

It looks good, I'll grant you, but most of those shots are like most anime, a still image with a few animated bits to make it look more dynamic. My Neighbor Totoro came out one year later and blows that out of the water.

Computer CGI is lazy and destroys a lot of the aesthetic personality of the art of animation.

When I worked at Blockbuster I'd sometimes put it on after the store closed.
