I couldn’t imagine being a mechanic nowadays.

Stick to fixing up your little toys. That’s much less complicated.

I miss the days of the old 350’s in the 80’s where you could sit under the hood and work on shite.

“Installation is reverse of removal.”

In Beamers, you have to take out the entire dashboard to get to the AC compressor.

I will never buy a new car. Yall can have it. I’ll just drive classics. Yes they do have AC and who gives a shite if you have to roll down windows manually?

Mechanics used to be blue-collar, middle class guys. Because of all the fricking shite they put in cars today and all the time it takes to do simple basic fricking work, mechanics now have entered upper middle class. While difficult to work on, these GM/Kia/Hyundai/Chrysler/Jeep/Ford engines are basically paying for multiple vacation homes for mechanics. Most mechanics don’t even want to work on the German garbage nowadays – but the ones that do make a hell of a living.
Hell, even Toyota and Honda have some questionable engineering. I saw a video the other day where they had to take something simple (a heater core or something like that) out of Tacoma. They wound up having to take the whole damn dashboard out. It took several hours just to get to the part. This is something that would’ve taken maybe an hour to completely finish in years past. Again, this is in part driven by all the bells and whistles and computer systems that people demand nowadays.

I have an uncle who had a gas staton/hire shop/oil change shop. His sons (twins) worked there in college so I was always there to and from classes.. Cussing was the first language there. Old men who would stop by all the time would cuss their arse off, telling dirty jokes. I remember one of the guys came with his wife one day and it was like listening to a whole new person talk. After that everyone gave him shite about it. Everyone got shite for one thing or another.. It builds character.

They’re just parts changers now with few exceptions.

One of the best cars I ever owned. Loved that thing.

I definitely do not have the patience to be an automotive mechanic. I turn wrenches in a plant. If I cant get it off with a 1" impact, out comes the torch. Cant be tight if its liquid.

They’ve so over-engineered engines now, largely to meet government requirements, that the average guy no longer even bothers trying to do their own maintenance. I use to have a ‘89 Ford Ranger. All I needed was my socket set, an oil filter wrench, an FL-1A Ford oil filter, 4 quarts of 5-W30 oil, and my truck ramps. I could change my oil in less than 10 minutes. Even enjoyed doing it.

I worked in the industry 45 years and I would refuse to do it

For reference, the 89 Ford Ranger had 140 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque
For comparison, the 2025 Ranger has base 270hp (up to 405), and 310 lb-ft of torque (up to 430)
Nobody is clamoring to go back to 140hp girlie engines with less torque than a Hyundai Sonata.
