Jim was a Naval Academy classmate of my dad. I met him when I was a kid.

RIP to a great American and hero

It's a damn shame he never got to walk on the moon.

97, he had a long successful run in life.
His cameo appearance in the movie Apollo 13.

Went to the moon twice. Apollo 8 and 13. There's a poignant moment in the film where Lovell's crew mates on 13 are looking at the moon from lunar orbit and he says, dejectedly, "I've seen it."

His commentary on the Apollo 13 DVD is outstanding.

Also Gemini 7 (14 days in a capsule the size of a VW Beetle) and Gemini 12 with Buzz Aldrin

They certainly helped, but a lot happened between the V2 and the moon landing. The crew-cut Americans and their slide rules get some of the credit.

I know he was 97 and had a badass life, but this still hurts.

RIP Jim

I grew up in awe of guys like Jim Lovell.

Sad day in this country saying goodbye to heroes like him

Must’ve sucked to have been the guy picked to fake the mission where we didn’t land on the moon.
