Jen Pawol will make history this weekend as the first woman to be an umpire in a regular-season MLB game.
Pawol will ump three games during this weekend’s Marlins-Braves series in Atlanta, including both ends of Saturday’s doubleheader and the series finale on Sunday, when she will be behind home plate. The doubleheader necessitated adding a fifth umpire to the crew, since each home plate umpire skips the other game they’re not working.

If she's better than Angel Hernandez I'm all for it.

I was gonna say she can’t be any worse than him.

Will probably eject a manager or player for talking to a different ump.

This is the first thing that came to my mind.

C.B. Bucknor would like a word.

Would not want to get to 3rd base with that umpire.

" I FEEL like that's a strike. Why are you arguing with me?"

I really thought I remembered this happening before, but it seems it was a minor league game in 1972. It didn't last long though:

quote:
Bernice Shiner Gera (June 15, 1931 – September 23, 1992) was an American baseball umpire. She became the first woman to umpire a professional baseball game in 1972, retiring after one game citing the resentment of other umpires.
quote:
In the fourth inning, Gera ruled Auburn base-runner Terry Ford safe at second on a double play, then reversed her call. Auburn manager Nolan Campbell disputed the decision and said that Gera's first mistake was putting on an umpire's uniform and her second was blowing the call. Campbell was ejected from the game, but Gera still decided to resign between games, which was later said to be planned, saying she became disenchanted with umpiring when the other umpires refused to cooperate with her on the field.

I'd rather see the pictures of Pawolov's dog.

More power to her. I'll say the same thing I said when female sports writers broke onto the scene ... I was active in my career as a sports writer at that point in time. If they're there to do the job, and they put their heads down and do the job, I have no problem and don't really care if they're male, female or hermaphrodite. If they're there to make a point and cause s**t instead of putting their heads down and doing the job, then I have a problem.

If she knows the rule book, went through the same schooling or training the rest did, I'm all for it. It would be great to get some new blood in there

So much worse than Angel. Its kind of unreal that he has been allowed to continue his career.

I’m in the same camp: If she’s there to do the job and do it well, great. I’m not going to celebrate that she’s a female umpire; I will celebrate if she does a good job. Gender should not matter one way or the other.

Not really the Umpires union is really strong and they are POC, it's racist if you criticize or fire them... Angel even sued the MLB because of it.
