From everything I’ve listened to and read, Haulcy seems to be the guy at SS. Shoulder or not, Gilbert has been a huge liability at Safety and similar to last year, missed another open field tackle that led to a 45 yd touchdown today.

Still 21 days to go, but hope we don’t screw around with this and wait to make the fix after we lose a costly game.

I think they have been switching 1s and 2s with guys in multiple positions every other day. I know I heard a report that Haulcy was running with the 1s a day or two ago.

Hopefully he's on the bench come the game time. I actually think Gilbert was worse than Sage Ryan last year. He can't tackle. I know he was supposedly hurt last year but that's no excuse. He was bad at TAMU as well. At some point it's the player.

Practice reports are saying the same thing, he can't tackle in open space. If your S the last man of defense can't make tackles in the open field that's immediately bench riding time for that position group. Defense was dominating offense and they hand the ball to Durham in practice with Gilbert who had an opportunity to shut the play down and he missed the tackle for Durham to bolt off a 50 yard TD run.

Durham is tough to take down but that sounds eerily similar to last season with Gilbert.

It’s definitely time for me to shift gears. My head immediately went to “I don’t know of any shortstop named Gilbert or Haulcy…”. Then I read the open field tackle comment and was like…

hes not with the 1s anymore he may get a rep here or there with the 1s but its the 2 transfers and then spears as your top 3 then Gilbert or toviano.

I still think they are having a hard time deciding what to do with toviano. hes played corner and safety and star in spring.
the backup star is tylen singleton I think . Ross wasnt at star iirc

Best guess is they're easing the transfers in. I'm not expecting to see much of Gilbert this year.

The guy who started 9 games for us last year?

You don’t just give that away to a new transfer. Competition breeds excellence

You do if the transfers are much better. The safety group was, collectively, the single worst unit on the team last year. It’s why LSU was at the bottom of the league in giving up big plays. The safeties turned what should have been 8-12 yard gains into 50 yard gains.

Myles Brennan started games for LSU. He was at LSU for 5 years. It didn’t stop LSU from bringing in a transfer, Daniels, and immediately (if not officially) naming him the starter.

This isn’t a lifetime achievement award situation. Especially this season with high expectations and a huge opening game. If transfers are better, they start. End of discussion

Agree. He’s one of the worst safeties I can remember. The angles were so bad and he couldn’t tackle. And couldn’t cover.
Haucly, spears, and Cooley should be in the rotation to start. Gilbert needs to be on the bench.

Clearly that’s not the case here.
Braelin Moore is a starter. Still a competition at Safety. If Gilbert is the guy against Clemson, then I trust the coach’s evaluation

I’d legitimately ask him to transfer at this point. Let the freshman and sophomores get their lumps. He’s a liability

Where’d you hear that? Yesterday the first team defense during the 11 on 11 scrimmage was:

Pyburn
Reliford
McKinley
Gooden
West
Whit
Perkins
Delane
Stamps
Cooley
Gilbert

Yeah, I agree. An injury is probably not the reason he took bad angles, and couldn’t break down and tackle in the open field.

______

Other talking heads. Moscono, Carter Power Hour are reporting this.

Moscono is doing a play by play rundown of the 11 on 11s from each practice.

Gilbert is playing similar to last year. He should be an emergency guy for us this year. He still doesn't tackle well.

Based on what I’ve seen from the safety’s since Kelly has been here, I absolutely do not trust the coach’s evaluation. Hope to be proven wrong.

It’s been a lack of talent, not lack of evaluation. We didn’t have better talent available
