My friend plans to stay in school because he can’t find a job in computer science

He’s using an .edu from a real SEC school (Alabama) that offers certificates. That edu gets him 6.99 prime, 1.99 Hulu and 4.99 Apple TV. And yes he’s completing courses while not paying a dime on his loans.

Is my friend being smart or just grifting?

I get 2/3 of these for free through Tmobile, half my Best buy purchases, etc.

Anything over $0 is still more than he can afford without a job

The narrative is that AI is replacing entry level, but the truth is the job market is just crap and companies can hire experienced developers for entry-level positions.

Tell me you didn’t go to college without telling me you didn’t go to college

That .edu address stays with you for like 8 years.

What do those two things have to do with each other? You’re making it seem like he’s staying on school just to save money on streaming.

Regular price for each of those:

Prime: $14.99…a savings of $8

Hulu: $9.99…a savings of $8

Apple TV: $9.99…a savings of $5

So your buddy is racking up tremendous debt to save $21 month on streaming services

Is he staying in school to stack certs? That’s not the worst plan in the world and staying on-campus can open some doors.

I only have anecdotal evidence, but it’s been okay for me and others that I know.

And this is in multiple areas, information systems, data science, Java developer

None of us are entry level though, so maybe it’s a different animal there.

Tell him to move to India then come back on a H-B1 visa and he will be a shoe in for an IT job.

Replaced by H1Bs. It just happened to me. They make under 30% of what I made, and they don’t care about the competence difference. If one of them screws up a project or pisses off the client, they just replace them with another H1B. It’s still cheaper than me actually knowing what I’m doing.
