Introducing yourself to your new neighbors. Is this a thing now?

Yesterday afternoon around 6pm a lady knocked on our front door and said she was stopping by to introduce herself since she bought the house down the road. It's about 1/4 mile away.

Just thought that it was a strange thing to do since we are out on a country road and not in a subdivision.

Is this normal? Do you introduce yourselves to your new neighbors whenever you move?

Next door or across the street is acceptable. Anything else is weird!

Nice lady next door came to introduce herself and welcome us to the neighborhood when we moved last year. Sweet lady. She brought us a box of small Bundt cakes for the kids.

And we exchanged phone numbers

Seems cool to me, but isn’t it usually the other way around? Welcome new neighbors, even in most rural settings.

It used to be that neighbors welcomed new comers but that seems to be old fashioned

Kind of strange outside of a subdivision... but it's always nice to know who your neighbors are.

Quarter mile away seems extreme (unless it’s rural and there aren’t houses between you). But why be annoyed that someone nice moved on near you? Knowing your neighbors is a good thing and we’ve moved away from that nowadays.

Never said that I was. Just thought it seemed odd for someone to do.
I've lived there for 24 years now and this is a first.

Only 1 house in between us, mostly cow fields.

I did when I moved into the neighborhood and I'm glad I did. The old lady next door loves to feed people. I walk over to get a plate once or twice per week . I keep her grass mowed for her. She's a hardcore LSU fan so I usually end up watching football with her on the weekends. Half the neighborhood can hear her screaming at the TV.

The old man across the street from me was an awesome dude to talk to until he got Alzheimer's. It's been sad seeing how fast he's gone downhill. He only speaks in slurs now.

Is she your neighbor or anyone between your homes? She sounds nice and it’s good to know your neighbors. She’s 60 and alone? Who knows if one day yall might be of some help to her or she may bake you a cake or cookies. My new neighbor brought over a charcuterie board and introduced herself with they moved in.

so you're complaining an older widow came to say hi? she's probably looking out for herself and keeping tabs on if her neighbors are friendly enough to help her when shes in trouble or weird and anti social.

I don't get the knocking on the door part.

I've jogged or walked through my neighborhood since we moved there almost 20 years ago. I will stop and introduce myself and talk to neighbors who are outside. but, I'm not knocking on doors.

Um, no.
She said that she lives alone and that her husband died last year. She's probably in her 60's if I had to guess.

Even better you can hit it raw and not worry about a pregnancy.

I was in my house for about 5 days and was on the front lawn with a plumber doing some work.. Out of the corner of my eye I see the across the street neighbors come marching over... Introduced themselves and went right into questions about me.. Where do you work? Married? No... any kids? No and the nest question was WHY? What a effin question... At that point my responses became more testy to the point that I literally shooed them away... The plumber was like WTF was that? He said that was an interview.. People get crazy with their neighborhood owner attitude...

I am the kind of neighbor that if you need help I am there otherwise leave me alone.. It has already happened that I was thrown under the bus by another neighbor to get his nosey arse out of trouble with another neighbor..

She lives about 1/4 mile down the road. 1 house in between us and mostly woods and fields the rest of the land.

Don't' know why y'all are assuming I'm mad or annoyed about this. I just thought it was odd because people normally stay pretty private these days.

interesting. in a neighborhood setting, I always felt it was the responsibility/duty of the existing neighbors to introduce themselves to the neighbor. Not the other way around.

I always introduce myself to my neighbors. It’s court ordered.
