Recommendation for large-breed dog ortho in Southern Louisiana?

We have a (very) large-breed dog who's having severe orthopedic problems, seemingly in the hips. Arthritis likely but not definitively identified as the/the only problem. We have a vet we like and have been using oral meds, Adequin injections, and supplements, but I'm concerned that, unless some sort of surgical intervention is possible and warranted, we may be running out of options.

Would love to have a second opinion just to make sure we've exhausted all possible avenues. Given the above, does anyone have any recommendations for a vet in Southern Louisiana with whom we might consult?

Very, very much appreciated.

Where are you? I would recommend Capital Area Veterinary Specialists. Dr. Kleinpeter referred me to them for my dog. Do you have pet insurance?

No recommendations here, but I do hope you're able to find what you need.

Have any pictures of your giant pup?

My family had two growing up, at different times- they were pretty awesome friends.

Good luck. I have two separate friends that love the breed, but I could never own one because of their health problems and short life span compared to other dogs.

They are fantastic dogs.

I am not sure, but I think all a vet can do is give him cortisone shots. I give my two big dogs Omega 3-6-9 gelcaps and glucosamine dog biscuits daily. Jax is 6 and Tinka is 4. They have no limps.

Highly recommend Whittington Vet Clinic in Abbeville. Both large animal and small. They have worked miracles on some of my dogs. Dr Paul usually helps me with the cows and Dr Casey takes care of my dogs.
Well worth the drive.

I have known both Paul and his wife for years, wonderful folks, if I lived there I’d take my pets to his office without a doubt.

One thing I have found with veterinary care is you really need someone who will provide sound advice on both the medical and financial aspects of your pet’s care. Far too many in the field willing to take a lot of your cash for little benefit to your pet excessively testing, expensive treatments like chemo for dogs with little chance of positive outcome etc.

Years ago, Causeway Animal Hospital in Metairie was tops for orthopedics. The head vet performed total hip replacements and a trailblazer in that procedure. There was a brilliant young vet, Dr. Gentinetta, who if I recall, also did orthopedics. It is now a VCA clinic and the old vets mostly gone (he and another “young” remain, and I’m unsure what he does there now, but he’s a hold over from the days of old. I’d call the clinic for him to discuss to determine if orthopedics is what he still does bc I remember how good he was. He might still do ortho or refer you to someone.
