Any of you work as remote online notaries?

I’ve been commissioned as a notary in Louisiana for a few years, but I haven’t been able to utilize it that much because I work a full-time job in financial services.
I was thinking about becoming a remote online notary in order to to be able to actually utilize my notary commission in order to make a little cash on the side.
Have any of you done this? Do you have any tips for me? I’m wondering how I would find clients even if I go out and get the necessary software and training, I have no idea how to get clients for something like this.

Are you serious? I was a notary for a few years doing real estate appraisals and there's no market for side cash.
You can just walk into your bank or the courthouse here and walk out with your documents notarized.
And if someone were to be willing to pay, I think places like CVS or UPS store places have notaries.

We've used it a couple of times in my firm. My experience has been that it is a great tool...in a time of dire need. Otherwise, I prefer to hire a local to sit with the executing party as the process can be a bit burdensome.
That said, if you get into it I'd shoot for title companies and law firms as clients. You might also have some success with financial firms.

Why would places that have notaries need a remote notaries? Every attorney, at least in Louisian, is a notary
I just use my admin since she’s a notary

Do you live in Missouri? It’s much more difficult to become a notary in Louisiana because we are a civil law state. The other 49 states are common law states.
Notaries in Louisiana can make $40 or more per document notarized. You won’t find notaries at many UPS stores, if any in Louisiana because it’s too hard to become one.

There was a lady down the road from my house when I was a kid that had one if those yard signs near the end of her driveway that said "Notary Public". I always wondered who in the world would come all the way out to our neighborhood to have something notarized.
My wife used to work for a law office and she was a notary. When she first got it, she thought she would be able to turn it into a side hustle too. I think she did one document for her dad and the rest were done at the law office as part of her regular work.

Yes, my staff is all commissioned, as am I.
We often have buyers/sellers in distant locations that cannot attend a physical closing in our office.

Maybe im confused, youre saying you use an out of state notary as needed? That makes sense to me, so he’d need to partner with firms outside of his home state to notarize within his state?

Where are you located? I'm in Dallas and every UPS store or bank that I went to had a notary on hand. My sister in New Orleans said that she went to multiple places and all of them said that basically no banks or UPS stores in the area had a notary on staff. She had to pay $35 and meet a guy to get the same document that I got notarized at the UPS store for like $7. I think it greatly depends on where you live.

Correct. For example- We're closing here in Florida, but the seller is on a mountain in Colorado and we need them to sign the deed. I'd hire a local (Colorado) notary to do that for me.

Yes, but also market to local firms and title agencies. My title agent is certified as a RON, but our preference is to send a warm body to the remote closing, so we don't utilize the capability except in extreme need.

It's a relatively new development. You get certified, there are some a/v requirements, ID verification...it's a whole thing.

Why we even need notaries (we don’t) in the year of our lord 2025 is beyond me. You can e sign something with block chain

The old lady in her trailer method is ripe for abuse as well. They both are dumb. E-sign is certainly better.

Are there limitations on what documents can be notarized using an online service? I don't think a will can be notarized online, for example.

If you market it as you will come to them, plenty of people will use you.
As they are doing the sale, you drive to them and notorize it. That’s a pretty sweet deal

I haven't tried to do a will online. The only pushback we get on RON in our practice is "bank policy." Some of them won't accept it.

I had a “mobile notary” come to me when I signed my closing documents for the sale of my condo out of state. He said he was part of an online portal where he would claim jobs and then go to people’s homes. The most convenient part for me is that he printed all the documents and then sent them off in the mail.
