We talk about team upsets a lot, but what about individual. You can even include things with a field of competitors like golf or racing or track, etc.

I know Buster Douglas over Tyson is an obvious. I keep going back to John Daly winning the 91 PGA. Dude wasn’t even in the original field, rolled into town late, and put it together for 4 rounds. Instantly an overnight sensation.

At Wimbledon, the 15-year-old Capriati stunned nine-time champion Martina Navratilova, defeating her in the quarterfinals in straight sets.[6]

This won’t move the needle for most, but I remember Capriati breaking onto the scene as a 13yo, and beating Martina at 15 was a huge deal.

That was a classic case of a collective action problem. Can show that on tape in econ class.

Serena was going for a calendar slam one year and some Italian junkballer beat her at the U.S. Open. It was in the semis, though.

Rousey was a tomato can that hadn’t fought anybody. She got exposed more than upset

Michael Chang as a 15 seed and 17 years old defeating No. 1 seed Ivan Lendl in the French Open, and then defeating No. 3 seed Edberg to win the tournament.

In hindsight, yes. But Rousey was like -1250 to win. It was a gigantic upset.

Lewis was maybe the best pure boxer of all the heavyweights of that time. He was also the owner of a glass jaw, terrible preparation at times and he ducked Riddick Bowe. Strange cat that could both beat anyone and lose to anyone depending on his focus and that jaw.
