A poli sci major tries to become an air traffic controller.

quote:

Higgins, who has a degree in political science from the University of Central Florida, stumbled onto the idea of becoming an air traffic controller while browsing the federal government’s hiring website. In 2019, after taking a test and undergoing medical and security screening, he was offered a place at the academy and shipped out to Oklahoma. The FAA placed Higgins in the demanding career track for controllers who manage aircraft in the middle of their journeys at high altitudes.

Then the story takes a turn as he barely graduates.

quote:

Higgins said he struggled through the academy program, graduating at the bottom of his class and getting “saddled” with an undesirable posting to Oakland.

In Oakland, he effed it up and got told.

quote:

In his first few days guiding aircraft at the Oakland, California, air traffic control center, trainee Ryan Higgins deleted a plane’s data from the radar screen. It was untrackable for a few frantic moments while more experienced controllers made sure the plane was on a safe path. The rookie mistake rattled Higgins and earned him a stern rebuke.

He pussed out.

quote:

He quit. “I just felt kind of miserable going to work and being berated when I’m just trying to learn,” said Higgins

But according to the Washington Post, it’s the FAA’s problem.

quote:

“If it was a more respectful, understanding culture, more patient, then I think I would have been more inclined to stick with it,” Higgins said.

Christ on a crutch! As a pilot and a passenger, I am very happy that 20 percent wash out. I’d rather washout too many many and have hurt feelings than have someone on the scope who cannot hack it.

ATC is one of those fields like medicine where the wrong decision at the wrong time can be catastrophic.

They expect to make a mistake which can kill hundreds of people and not get fussed at over it?

more patient

I’m sure telling a pilot who’s in a dive after a bird strike to be patient is what it’s all about.

One of the more stressful occupations out there, and he can't handle being called out on a MAJOR mistake. Definitely the best solution for him to wash out.

Surprised it's only 20%

I write this while sitting on a plane. My biggest concern is that this media story gets traction and they “fix” the program by eliminating peer pressure and lowering job standards.

ATC’s make good money for a reason. It’s an important job.

I'd be happier if it was 33% but I guess that crappiest 13% ensures enough butts are in seats in the towers around the country.

Have you listened to ATC audio recently?

This is already happening.

The guy in the OP would have absolutely washed out 20 years ago.

I have a friend who’s an ATC.

Communication skills are dead on-point.

Good guy, got his shite together.

Dude makes me less concerned to fly commercial.

tl/dr: There are competent ATC folks at work today

A lot! I sold my plane in November and don't intend to fly anymore. But I'll always be grateful to the folks in ATC who patiently guided me through training, then my first dozen flights, or so.

I would have to imagine that this is one of those fields that's absolutely ripe for being one of the first on the chopping block with AI looming, no?

Only took 2 generations for the Higgins' to go from building boats to defeat the Nazis to literally shaking for being called out on frickups.

Just watching this video of an ATC video game gave me reflux. That kid had a dream job and blew it.
