Do we win the Natty in 2012 with Mathieu?

We definitely don't lose to Bama with him on the field. We would have been. 11-1 and playing for the SEC title or maybe even undefeated going into Atlanta.
I don't see Notre Dame beating us either. Bama steamrolled them.
What could have been if we gave him just a slap on the wrist.

The Florida game at that time losing 14-6 seemed like an abominable offense before we realized how good they were. Muschamp did a hell of a job in year 1 to year 2.
Impossible to predict for sure, but he may have brought an overall swag to the defensive unit that would have elevated everyone, which could have changed many games.
His replacement was taller than he was, but can’t remember who filled his spot if it was Tharold Simon or not, but he also turned out to be a head case

I have, without a doubt, no doubt in my mind we do! He was the biggest gamechanging player ive seen in my lifetime. I hope one day i see him roaming the sidelines as head coach od da tigahs to claim some unfinished business and wins us a national championship!

His head space had started to change a little bit by that point.
Pat Pete saved him

I mean maybe. It's not like the QB's in either game we lost were phenomenal...

I could see it he was worth a T/O per game plus usually a big stop at critical point of a big game and half the time he scores as well

The thing with Tyrann was, you never knew when he might pop. He had that little hibernation period during 2011 before exploding again against Arkansas.
The Florida game ended up being just one possession and he easily could've had a return or a turnover that flips that score. I also think he likely peels off on Yeldon where a young J Mills just got a bit too eager. I say LSU probably splits Florida and Bama and if they made it to the BCSNCG, I think they beat the Irish.
I do think Alabama beat the Irish worse than LSU would've mainly because I think Bama was a better team all season than LSU that year but I think LSU was better that night in November. That wave of emotion and Tiger Stadium was just unreal.

Les was still the coach
Tyrann probably would have been in jail & not made $100M in the NFL

Not giving him “just a slap on the wrist” saved the guys life. Miles deserves criticism for a ton of things. This isn’t one of them.

Him being gone forced freshmen Jalen Collins and Jalen Mills to both start that entire season. Both ended up being very good players, obviously, but Tyrann's absence forced a lot of depth issues. 2012 was already a very good team, so throwing in the best defensive player in the country could not have hurt. I think we'd beat Bama and then beat Brian Kelly.
Here's a follow up question: How much longer would Les Miles have been at LSU had we won the 2012 championship? Have to think that buys him at least 2 more years, and there's also the added bonus in recruiting from being on that kind of run and being an actual formidable opponent to Saban. Maybe winning a championship with Mettenberger triggers a change in how Les viewed who his QBs should be moving forward?

Not unless he was going to play QB and call offensive plays.

He would have made a play earlier in the game that would have changed things, so the Yeldon pass likely never happens.
But just on that play he probably sniffs it out.

I was at that bama game and I remember thinking no way does Mathieu not sniff out that pass to Yeldon at the end of the game if he’s on the field. . No way does they coast right down the field. But he wasn’t and they did.

The problem would have been the Georgia game in sec championship. That was. Good UGA team.would have been a good matchup but with les you never know

Lol. Mathieu wasn't stopping that last drive. Saban isn't an idiot, and he would have called plays that marginalized Tyrann.

It probably doesn’t come down to that. I’m taking the best defensive player in all of college football to at least turn one of their prior TDs to FGs.

I think that screen pass to Yeldon goes differently if Tyrann is in, so yes. We would have beat Notre Dame that year without Tyrann. Georgia would have been tough too in SECG.
