Follow up to the other thread.

Scruffy doesn’t follow the tech world that intimately.

What does society gain from these massive data centers?

Why are we pouring so much time, energy, and money into building these massive structures?

Scruffy would like to know.

Is the usage of so much water, worth whatever benefit it is to have and process so much data ?

You wouldn’t be able to wake up and put on your digital scruffy costume every day if it weren’t for data centers.

Are the data centers we have already not sufficient?

Honest question.

These things seem to be popping up everywhere now.

It uses a ton of electricity and takes up a lot of land too. It doesn't provide that many jobs considering how big these places are, though the jobs are high paying. This is mainly all in a push for the US to control AI instead of China.

Yes. The internet and data needs are additive until a major advancement in storage and processing happens that allows for a smaller footprint.

AI and supercomputing are very hungry boys too.

Our future is basically Wall E and we need these data centers to beat China to that future

I'm sure somebody will. The new Rayville Cafe is peddling some fine fried chicken I'm told. I've not been myself...

Most, if not all, are private for profit ventures, right? I assume market demand is driving their proliferation

Not for a mass commercial adoption of AI.

This may help:

That is another question.

How exactly are these data centers a “for profit” enterprise?

Who are they receiving their funds from?

SallysHuman is pleased to see Scruffy reverting to third person... seems like Scruffy stopped doing that for a little while, but SallysHuman always liked it.

Data centers... Data is information, information is power.
