The state is officially canceling the Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion, Louisiana's biggest-ever coastal restoration project, and moving to replace it with a smaller-scale version accompanied with other elements, with officials citing ballooning costs among other factors.

The announcement on Thursday had been widely anticipated, but remained a major development considering the years of study and evaluation that had gone into the $3 billion unprecedented project.

"The state of Louisiana, through its Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA), has reached an agreement with the Louisiana Trustee Implementation Group to terminate the Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion Project," a statement from trustees overseeing funds from the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill said.

Tony Alford, who chairs Gov. Jeff Landry's advisory commission on coastal issues, also confirmed the state was moving to cancel the project.

"At the end of the day, it's just something that we just could not afford, no way, shape or form," Alford said.

Plaquemines and St Bernard should not receive a single further dollar for restoration. Let them fall into the Gulf.

This was the expected outcome once Landry and Nungesser got in the Capitol. They are taking a short-sighted self-enriching solution to a long-term existential problem for Louisiana. As the saying goes, elections have consequences.

So Landry is taking kickbacks from the oyster lobby, and the pogie boats. Got it. Talk about voter remorse. Bc I have it big time.

Time to just get rid of the levees and let nature take back over.

So fricking stupid.

At some point somebody needs to just go blow a bunch of holes in the levees just past chalmette or belle chasse and let it rebuild naturally

One thing to be said about this is it was a 50 year long project that would only create 25 mi.² of land in one small area and it was gonna cost $3 billion, this was not gonna protect much of the coast only a small area of Jefferson in Saint Bernard Parish on one side of the river

create 25 mi

It would create net land. It was going to take a project on this scale to compensate for the land loss rate.

My absolute favorite is the classic pathological lie of "this will hurt the wildlife!"

As if you give a flying frick about the wildlife.
