quote:

Even as he shouldered the burden of a city’s collective trauma – thousands of readers reached out to him – he was bedeviled by alcohol, depression, anxiety and an addiction to prescription painkillers.

He left the paper in 2009, then bounced around to other local media outlets. He hosted a French Quarter walking tour. He waited tables. And he drank – a lot.

In 2021, following multiple hospitalizations and a near-fatal crisis in a Kenner motel, he was diagnosed with end-stage cirrhosis. He’d nearly succeeded in drinking himself to death.

Faced with mortality, he disappeared. He says he quit booze, quit writing and retreated to the Maryland woods and waterfalls that first enchanted him as a teenager.

For those of us who went through the Katrina insanity, Rose gave us voice in those early, frustrating, frightening early days. My grandmother never really recovered from the storm, but she loved reading his columns. Really sad to see what has happened to him, hopefully he can find some peace in the time he has left.

It’s a heartbreaking column to read, but I think he’s found a degree of peace. I hope he can sort out things with his children before he’s gone.

May be the most depressing string of words ever written in the history of the English language.

What happened here?

Body started shutting down from substance abuse.

quote:

He and his older brother Richard had fantasized about living on an island. In April 2021, Rose decided to scout out Puerto Rico.
He checked into the Red Roof Inn in Kenner the night before his early morning flight. He started hallucinating.
“Not only visual and aural, but tactile,” he recalled. “I was holding things in my hand that weren’t there. I had fingers reaching through the bed.”

An ambulance collected him. His liver, kidneys, pancreas and spleen were failing. Doctors said he probably would have died on the plane to Puerto Rico.

Yeah, for me that would be the toughest thing. After putting your kids through hell I’d want to reconcile with them more than anything. Hopefully he gets that opportunity before he passes.

I'll never forget Chris Rose. When he was a special-interest/beat-writer for T-P in '95, he learned I was getting a booth at the Jazz Fest for my Etch-a-Sketch art. It was the first time I was ever in the paper. He was a really nice/affable guy, so easy to talk to. It was unsurprising to me when his career started to blossom because of his charisma & curiosity. Hate to hear this news. Wish you the best, Chris.

He was diagnosed with KennaBrahzophrenia.

That’s sad. I knew Chris, got to know him after Katrina, his kids and my kids went to school together. Katrina broke him as well as many other people, but it really broke him.

He had really funny articles after Katrina that everyone in the area could relate to.

If you’re interested and want to dive into his life after Katrina read some of his columns and he even wrote a few books.

It crazy how well he was able to capture everyone's feelings and experiences after Katrina with those articles.

It is sad. Chris is a gifted writer who put out poignant and moving pieces. But it did not happen to him. He made every choice that got him where he is.

Addiction and the depression that often causes it are sad but until you accept the idea it is your decision at the base to get better all the counseling, support and assistance in the world will not do a damn thing. He kept getting hired again and again from the TP to Gambit to Fox8 to Rouses because folks loved him and he squandered every chance.

Chris had a lot of folks spend a lot of time and money trying to help him and he kept making the wrong choices.

Again, tragic, but it did not "happen" to him. I do not post this to slam Chris. I want him to be better. But I hate seeing someone say this happened to him.

By the way, I was closer to this for a while as I knew Kelly since childhood.

Depression sucks.

I fight it constantly, it just wraps your mind.

Life is unfair and unequal. Some of us have to fight exponentially harder to be alright. But you obviously understand the most important thing, Happiness does not just happen. It is not a state of being, You often have to fight and work to get there. No assistance will matter without that,

I have been in some dark places mentally. I know it sucks beyond belief. I hope you keep fighting and win more often than not.
