PLAQUEMINE - The Iberville Parish Sheriff's deputies made one arrest and are seeking two additional suspects in the theft of a sports car that was custom-made for a woman who uses a wheelchair.

Deputies arrested 19-year-old Jaron Collins of Baton Rouge and are searching for 19-year-olds Calvin James Jr. and Jereme Thomas. Collins was booked for theft of a motor vehicle.

WBRZ's Brittany Weiss spoke with Kristie Mascarella in May after her car was stolen from her home. The one-of-a-kind car was tailor-made for Mascarella, who was born with spina bifida and has been in a wheelchair her entire life. The vehicle was found a week later, stripped for parts and abandoned.

16 to 19 year olds are doing 99% of these crimes.

And look, it sucks someone whose daddy should have shot their load on the wall, went around stealing cars and ended up taking hers, but I think the whole issue of her being in a wheelchair is irrelevant.

There isn't that much to the hand controls she uses. They can be put in any vehicle.

Its probably something similar to this.

I am not going to get into the cost, what they charge is almost criminal and they love to make everyone they do it for think they are god sent for changing the lives of those who wouldn't be able to drive without them, but the fact is, those places lobby to keep that way. They didn't like it when Toyota started making vans with lowered floors (you have to request one from Toyota, but its much better than buying a van that then has to be converted by someone else which messes up the warranty on the van).

Of course they would try to convince people to not buy Toyotas so that they would have to convert it (in someone gets a van with a lowered floor done at assembly that takes money from them), but my point is, with insurance and everything and the fact that you can even buy those hand controls on Amazon..

What I am getting at is that I wouldn't ever agree to do a story like that because my situation isn't any different than the other people whose vehicle got stolen.

With that said, it does take a real piece of shite to get in a car, clearly see it has hand controls which means its probably for someone who is phyically limited and can't just get in any vehicle and drive, and still decide to steal it.. But I also wouldn't get a vehicle that would be attractive to them.

Or is that only for Chargers?

How much does a full custom wheelchair like that cost? I'm also thinking that her insurance isn't going to cover the custom modifications to her vehicle that makes it hers. Not really my style but that sucks for her.

I ran into one wheelchair driver and he was a super dick. He had his door open to get in and I wanted to park next to him. I waited patiently for him to get in.

He got in and didn’t close his door. I waited some more and he just sat there. I politely tooted my horn and he motioned for me to park. No fricking way with the door open. I told him I’ll wait for him to close his door to park.

Well the a-hole said there was plenty of room and he wasn’t closing his door. I asked “why not?” He said “because I can.”

Well it escalated and he threw his drink on me. But I ducked and dodged and he missed me. He then drove away. A very angry man.

The after they found the car picture is really sad. But it's sitting out in the open for all to see, so the folks who live near it saw nothing?

I am not sure. Not being an electric wheelchair I really don't have a clue, but if I had to guess I would say $2k-$3k. Anything medically related is almost a scam. The way these places operate should be illegal. Look, I am all for companies making as much as possible, but the shite these places do is almost criminal. For example, doctors will prescribe a new wheelchair for old people in homes who end up only living for months after they get their wheelchair, then they turn around and sell that same chair for the same price..

Anyway, the term "custom", IMO is a very loose term when talking about wheelchairs. Yeah, its custom in the fact she picked the colors and they make adjustments to fit her, but what custom really means is that they can charge more for switching out a part that has a different color.
