Ruger American Gen II Ranch in 5.56 — Stick with 5.56 or Jump to .300 BLK?

Looking for some advice from folks who’ve run the Ruger American Gen II Ranch — particularly in 5.56.
I’m eyeing this rifle as a dual-purpose tool:
Trainer for my 6-year-old son
Hog and occasional deer gun — especially for night hunts where I can slap a thermal on it and quietly drop a big sow
Here's my current setup:
--Polonium K 5.56 suppressor (would love to keep using this across platforms)
--Tacticon 1-6x LPVO (just need to add a QD mount to swap with my thermal)
--Plenty of 5.56 ammo already on hand
I like the Ranch model because it’s compact enough for use in a climbing stand, unlike my .308 7600 pump which is too long and bulky
My dilemma:
Should I stick with 5.56 and maximize what I already have?
Or should I bite the bullet and go .300 Blackout, get a .30 cal can down the line, and set this rifle up for quieter terminal performance on game?
I’ve dropped a 300+ lb boar with M855 before, so I know 5.56 can do the job with the right shot, but .300 BLK is definitely tempting for subsonic suppression and better expansion on hogs.
Appreciate any real-world input — especially if you've run this gun suppressed or trained kids with it. Thanks!

just bought this exact rifle about a month or two ago, but when it comes to bolt guns, i'm a 35 yo Fudd.
.308 or bust.
that's the only piece of feedback i can give you.

Full power 223 loads are very effective on deer and me and my kids have killed at least 5-6 with devastating results from 30-150yds.
I have seen several animals shot (deer/hog/yote) with a 308 suppressed subsonic from 30-100yd and it’s very unimpressive with limited damage or blood loss and follow up shots needed. My buddy who was shooting them has regulated them to pigs only based on how they perform.
ETA:the suppressed 308s are movie quiet and I have seen coons shoot with them out of one side a box stand and deer feeding 100yds away on the other side never even flinch at the shot.

I will say that my 5.56 Ruger Gunsite Scout is one of my favorite to shoot. My son enjoys it as well. I think they discontinued that one, but any 5.56 bolt should be a great trainer for your son.

Given you’re already set up for 556, I’d go with that

The older I've gotten, the answer to adding another caliber to the collection is usually "no" unless there's a compelling reason.

good advice guys....I'll wait for a few more opinions and then make a decision and head to Cabelas! (Bass Pro now)

Yes

77 grain 5.56 not bad, and RC2 suppressors not too hard to get currently.

This is the point I've gotten to in my life.

I’m honestly curious why do you think this would be ? Blackout seems to have solid results. .308 suppressed seems like a better caliber as you can still shoot regular ammo. I’ve never considered a .308 but I’m going to look into it.

6.5 grendel
This and 300 blackout are the best pig calibers in my opinion.

I have this gun in 6.5 grendel and it is a stone cold killer. Love the short barrel, when running a can I'd say it's a little louder than a .22. Neck/head shots are easy with the low recoil and make it very kid friendly

Most likely would have to do with the bullet that is being loaded into it.
the velocity would be the exact same on both (within reason) but if a match bullet is being used in the .308 and a bullet designed to expand at slow speeds in the .300 blk (which are easy to find loaded), then you'd have very different results.
if a fast 1:3 or 1:5 barrel twist is used in the .300 blk and a standard 1:12 in .308, the .300 would expand much better.

As with alot of bullet failures it was misuse of intended purpose. I don’t remember the exacts but it was a boutique cartridge company loading of a heavy for caliber bullet being pushed subsonic ~950 or so out the muzzle. I think the bullets just were not expanding and or getting enough penetration and the velocity was not fast enough to get massive wound channels.
ETA: my calculator shows that a bullet with a ballistic coefficient of .330 (30-30 bullet) 180 grains is gonna be moving at 900fps if it starts out at 950.
I have personally seen what a 357 140 Barnes at 1175 does to a deer (very impressive)at 35yd. I wouldn’t think the difference in velocity would make that much of a difference but maybe it does.
