What's with keeping windows closed on flights now?

I find it really frustrating how it seems like most passengers tend to keep them closed nearly all the time.

I completely understand the guidance on the tarmac when it's hot before takeoff to keep them closed so things stay a bit cool. But after that, they just never go back up.

Part of it must be the device addiction, but it's not like you need ABSOLUTE DARKNESS for that.

Doesn't anybody like to look out the window anymore? Especially on approach and landing? Sometimes the crew even says "shades must be up for landing" and fliers just ignore them.

Bonus pet peeve of, in the now overly dark cabin, the person adjacent to you deciding randomly to turn on the blazing overhead LED (despite the fact that they are also looking at a screen and don't need it).

I really don't think it used to be like this - and not even that long ago. I usually board in the first group, so I've taken to surreptitiously raising as many of the shades as I can around my seat, betting that at least some of the sheep will just go with it however it happens to be.

I do it too much to the point where I get a stiff neck after every window seat flight. I like following the landscpe and guessing cities.

That being said, if I'm not in the window seat, I dont really care. It's too hard to see anything from the middle out anyway.

People who keep the shade open when the sun is parallel with the window, causing everyone in the row to squint for a +2hr flight is way more of a pet peeve.
It's very easy to intelligently manage this somewhat occasional thing.

I’m usually in an aisle seat but if I’m not I like it open when we’re taking off and landing so I can see if the plane is about to slam into the ground or not. After that it depends on if I’m sleeping.

Domestic flight, they should always be open. I'd prefer them to also be open when I'm flying during the day across the Atlantic, but I also understand my one window being open bathes the cabin in daylight, so I suck it up and drink more booze.

Try flying over Africa where there isn't a single light or anything discernable to see until you hit Libya at night flying S to N.

Uhh I just want to watch a movie on my iPad. Do you want them to put windows in movie theaters as well?

I tried to keep a window cracked on a flight to SNN? years ago, and the purser had a push stick like you use on a table saw specifically to close blinds for people sitting at the window. I felt like an a-hole, and never did it again, because when I was coming back from the pisser I realized what my one window did to the cabin. As long as there are gay flight attendants slinging drinks, we're fine.

I always book a window seat & my window will always be open (day or night) unless the sun is directly in my eyes as a result.

Then get a window seat. You sound like the person who rubbernecks over the window person so you can look out the tiny arse window

The cabin is not a movie theater. It's fine to have some natural light while still being able to easily see screens.

Again, I completely understand when it's the sun itself perfectly lined up with the windows. That isn't very often.

Me getting a window seat will change the behavior of the entire flying public?

I'm not sure what this means. We're now not allowed to even turn our heads?

At least on United, they only make this announcement for exit row. Have heard it for international flights, though.

Anyway, I travel with heavy frequency to LAX and SFO from ORD, and in the window seat nearly 10/10 times. It's a 4+ hour flight, so watching a couple movies is my preferred method for passing time. In daylight, especially going west in the AM, will always keep the shade open for takeoff and landing, but otherwise close to see my screen a bit more clearly. Once I'm on the red-eye back to Chicago, really no reason to close it.

I'm 100% with you on this. I like light. I don't sit around in the dark to watch TV at my house. I'm not a vampire. Everybody now wants to sit in their dark bubble and look at their screen. I want to look at my screen too, but I don't like it dark. I usually sit on the aisle, but if I'm at the window, my screen will be open unless it's nighttime or the sun is blasting across the cabin.

Same, unless I'm planning to fall asleep. Even then, I'll ask whoever is next to me if they want it to stay open.

I take 125-150 flights a year. Been there, seen that. I don't need to see white clouds for 16 hours. The light reflecting inside is not relaxing.

I will occasionally open it for take off or landing. If I am with the wife or kids, they can have the window and do whatever they want with it. I don't fault others for having theirs open either, just like I don't fault them for lowering their seat.

Natural light is "not relaxing"? What does that even mean? Certainly from our bodies' standpoint, it's the ONLY type of light that is actually good for you. Sitting in near total darkness in the middle of the day seems the opposite of relaxing.
